KBIA Summer traditions

Kicking off the second half of summer with a weekend full of festivites is just how we roll at KBIA.  On Saturday, we started off the day with our July Watersports, Awards & BBQ.  Our most important and meaningful tradition is giving out ribbons and wedges to many smiling and encouraged children.  Wrapping up a fun-filled day, the adults of KBIA gathered on the cove for our tenth annual Seaside Celebration.  Moving into the second half of the summer season, we are looking forward to some newly added family social events, the Reid Sacco Family Regatta, Cove Walks, weekend sailing & kayaking, movie nights, and so much more!

Family Fun Events – NEW!

Just in case you weren’t having enough fun this summer, we have been working to create more opportunities for family and community gatherings at KBIA.  We are excited to announce three new events to add to your social calendar this week!

Extended Family Bonfire
Wednesday, July 26

Our Wednesday family bonfire and barbecue on the beach will stay open for an adult/family gathering until the movie night is about to close (we will close it down just before 9PM).  Bring an appetizer or something to share, any beach game (bocce, horseshoes, etc.), and meet us at Mother’s Beach from 6 to 9 PM.  This is a great opportunity to meet other members and experience a fun evening on the beach. If you partake in adult beverages, please keep them in covered containers. Please remember to bring your own plates, cups, cutlery.  No registration required.

Swim Meet
Friday, July 28

Hosted at the KBIA pool, join us for a swim meet against participants from the Portland Polar Bears Swim Team.  Warm ups at 5 PM, event start at 5:30 PM.  Any child aged 7 and up that is enrolled at any point in the summer on Swim team (diving included!) is encouraged to attend. Sign up at KBIA with Anu at the pool or Sue Donaher ([email protected]).  Spectators welcome to cheer on all participants!

Family Pool Day
Sunday, July 30

Join us on Sunday between 1 and 3 PM for open swim for the whole family! That’s right – pretty much for the first time ever, we are inviting families (adults too!!) for a splashing good time in the KBIA pool.  For an added treat, we will also have ice cream available.  Suggested donations of $5 per person, this event is open to all members, no registration required.  If more than 50 swimmers want to swim at any one time, we will rotate people in.

Honoring our children
July award-winners named

We have many children here who excel in their areas of special interest, and we honored them at Saturday’s awards ceremony with KBIA “wedges.”  For children we saw go “above and beyond,” we awarded the traditional silver-ware that has a permanent home in our office.  Their names will be engraved, forever a part of our KBIA history.  This year’s July award-winners include:
  • Kate Scipio del Campo for the Feldman Art Award
  • Sophia Duncan for the Sisters Gerald & Vincent Art Award
  • Tru Jarvis for the Keeper of the Cove Award
  • Braden Luken for the Eagle Rock Yacht Club Friendship Cup
  • Rosemary Campanella for the Griswald Cup Award for tennis staff
  • Gracyn Strachan for the Cornelia C. Smith Swimming Award for staff

*All KBIA children receive participant ribbons.  If you did not pick them up after the awards, and would like to do so, please check the office.  We also have a number of “wedges,” or plaques for our award-winners not present on Saturday!

Seaside Celebration
Great friends, spectacular night

A spectacular crowd attended our tenth annual Seaside Celebration.  A night full of friends, libations, and delicous food, made for a fantastic way to celebrate the special community that we are so fortunate to be a part of. And who are we kidding – nothing beats the view over the cove – rain or shine, the beautiful view makes any night special.  Thank you to all participants of the silent auction – winners of the pool party, bonfire BBQ, and parking spot will be contacted by office staff.  Donations to the KBIA scholarship fund are gratefully accepted and appreciated.

Sailing for a great cause
Eighth Annual Reid Sacco Family Regatta

Honoring a longtime KBIA student and instructor who lost his battle with sarcoma at the young age of 20 in 2005, the Reid Sacco Family Regatta holds a special place in our hearts.  Sailors and spectators alike are invited to the eighth annual Reid Sacco Family Regatta hosted by KBIA on Saturday, August 12th.  The day starts at 12:30 PM with a skipper meeting, followed by sailing at 1 PM.  Interested participants should register in the office to reserve a KBIA boat or bring their own boat to launch between 285 and 292 Beach Avenue.  Due to the shallow nature of the cove, even at high tide, sailors should use an Opti, Laser, or Chickadee watercraft.

A $10 suggested donation per sailor will benefit the Reid Sacco Foundation.  For information on the Reid Sacco Foundation, visit www.cancerinyoungadults.org/about-the-alliance/.

Volunteer Board
Get involved!

The KBIA Board of Directors is a purely volunteer run organization.  The Board is always looking for people who are interested in becoming more involved, whether by working on a committee or by sitting on the Board itself.  Please contact the office (who will forward your interest along to the appropriate committee of the Board), if you would like to nominate yourself or someone else, join a committee, or simply want to learn more about the different opportunities available.
