Reid Sacco Family Regatta

Sail with us!

Come one, come all! KBIA’s sixth annual Reid Sacco Family Regatta is this Sunday, August 16th.  Skipper meeting is at 11 AM, followed by an 11:30 AM start.  Interested participants may register in the office to reserve a KBIA boat or bring their own boat to launch between 285 and 292 Beach Avenue.  Please be aware that due to the shallow nature of the cove, even at high tide, sailors should use an Opti, Laser, Taz, or Chickadee watercraft.

A $10 suggested donation per sailor will benefit the Reid Sacco Foundation.  The regatta honors a longtime student and instructor who died of sarcoma at age 20 in 2005.  For information on the Reid Sacco Foundation, visit www.cancerinyoungadults.org/about-the-alliance/.

2015 HYC Youth Regatta – 420 Class State of Maine Championships
A Sailor’s life for me

On July 30th and 31st, the Harraseekat Yacht Club hosted the 2015 HYC Youth Regatta in South Freeport, Maine.  Six kids and one coach from KBIA sailed in the 420 Class State of Maine Championships.  Among 48 starters, Harry Stevenson and Aiden Wood placed 29th, Peter Mitchell and Quinn O’Hara placed 34th, and Isabelle Wood and Clara Harter placed 46th.  Congratulations to all – we are so proud of you!

Getting in and out safely at KBIA

Please help us keep KBIA safe for everyone! Our pick-up/drop-off zone is designed for a quick in-and-out, and it is imperative that drivers stay with their vehicles at all times. In case of emergency, this is the only way in for response vehicles. Kennebunk police have and will continue to ticket both areas. We appreciate your cooperation in helping us move traffic along in that busy section!

Clynk for KBIA

CLYNK is another way to help preserve our beach and help KBIA at the same time! We now have the green CLYNK bags available at our office for members to pick up, fill with returnables, and redeem them at the Kennebunk Hannaford (or any CLYNK redemption center). Proceeds from KBIA-tagged bags will benefit our nonprofit organization.

Explore Strawberry Island … start here

While our children more commonly visit the island by walking directly over the sand at low tide, the rocky island is also accessible to the public via our “Gateway to Strawberry Island.” KBIA’s .34-acre rocky plot on Great Hill Road provides access to Strawberry Island. Just look for our sign at 38 Great Hill Road, next to the small plot owned by the Kennebunk Land Trust.

Sign up for our last Cove Walk of the season this Saturday 12 to 2 PM, fun for the whole family!

KBIA Summer traditions

Keeping with our KBIA traditions, we held our July Watersports, Awards & BBQ this past Saturday, topping the day off with cocktails by the cove at our Seaside Celebration.  And what fun we all had!  Despite an unseasonably chilly day, watersports were a splashing good time, and awards were given out to many smiling and encouraged children.  Moving into the second half of the summer season, we are looking forward to the annual CIT ropes course challenge, the Reid Sacco Family Regatta, one last Cove Walk, weekend sailing & kayaking, movie nights, and so much more!

Honoring our children
July award-winners named
Article Image

We have many children here who excel in their areas of special interest, and we honored them at Saturday’s awards ceremony with KBIA “wedges.”  For children we saw go “above and beyond,” we awarded the traditional silver-ware that has a permanent home in our office.  Their names will be engraved, forever a part of our KBIA history.  This year’s July award-winners include:

  • Abby McGuckin and Anu Rawlings for the Comelia C. Smith Award for staff
  • Lily Sepic for the Feldman Award for the arts
  • Elly Polivy for the Sisters Gerald & Vincent Art Award for the arts
  • Nora Kiernan for the Keeper of the Cove Award
  • Jimmy Mitchell for the Friendship Cup
  • Dan Jussaume for the Griswald Cup for tennis teaching

*All KBIA children receive participant ribbons.  If you did not pick them up after the awards, and would like to do so, please check the office.  We also have a number of “wedges,” or plaques for our award-winners not present on Saturday!

Seaside Celebration
Oh what a night!

Saturday marked the eight annual Seaside Celebration, where over 200 members and friends gathered for cocktails by the cove.  We were honored to have eight past presidents attend, and even pose for a few pictures.  It was a grand time to catch up with old friends, meet new friends, and enjoy the evening, all by a spectacular setting by the sea!

Dear

“Live in the sunshine, swim the sea, drink the wild air.” ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

Summer may be halfway over, but we still have half of summer left! And remember, we are lucky enough to be open for nine weeks this season, rather than the usual eight.  Whichever way you look at it, all of us at KBIA are ready and excited to get week five’s adventures underway.

Make the most of this summer and sign up for an activity that opens your child to a new perspective, a new skill, a new friend.  Swimming, surfing, tennis…sailing, woodworking, nature…reading, painting, drama…there is something for everyone.  With so many to choose from, we encourage you to come visit our office if you need assistance.  Office hours are Monday 8 AM to 5 PM, Tuesday to Friday 9 AM to 12 PM and 1 to 4 PM.  See you at the beach!

Please help us keep KBIA safe for everyone and stay with your vehicles in the designated pick-up and drop-off zone in front of the pool.  It is crucial to stay within the white paint — there is no spot before and after the crosswalk to the playground to enhance visibility of kids crossing the street.

The drop-off/pick-up zone is also for emergency vehicles, so drivers must remain with their cars at all times.  Kennebunk police have and will continue to ticket both areas.  We appreciate your cooperation in helping us stay safe, and move traffic along in that busy section!

Bathrooms & Changing Rooms

It’s been a busy spring for us in the office at KBIA, and we thank all of our preregistered families for helping us in advance. Just a reminder that registration is first come, first served, and classes are filling up! We are open all this week in advance of Opening Day, so don’t hesitate to contact us!

Please be advised our office hours are:

8 AM to 5 PM Mondays
9 AM to 4 PM Tuesdays — Fridays
(and closed 12-1 PM for lunch)

‘This table is reserved’

Back by popular demand, we have bundled some of our most popular classes to give children a three-hour (or, with tennis, four-hour) period of KBIA programming with supervision included between classes.

Again this year, we have added a Bundle
Coordinator position to oversee the children throughout the day, and we will reserve one picnic table exclusively for these children. For those children who opt for the extended hour, we will have a reserved spot for their belongings while they are at their tennis lessons. Please look for the blue wheelbarrow!

And as a reminder for the bundles, parents drop off their child at the first class and pick them up at their last class.

Sail the Cove! Kayak the Cove!

There’s nothing quite like the feel of setting sail in the Cove — or paddling its gentle waters. We invite members of all ages to enjoy KBIA’s spectacular waterfront during our scheduled “Open Sail” sessions, which are available to all KBIA members (parents, grandparents and children) who would like to independently enjoy the Cove in one of KBIA’s sailboats or kayaks. Previous sailing and kayaking experience is required, as well as a life jacket and closed-toe water shoes.

Explore the Cove on guided walk

At high tide, the Cove at KBIA provides just enough water to swim, sail and explore the waters wih a paddle. It’s a whole new world at low tide, however, where snails, crabs and other creatures can be found. Come explore the majestic Cove at low tide on a guided walk during low tide and see all the natural treasures you can find!

Staff Updates

Please join us in welcoming Susan Roux, our new Communications Coordinator.  She will be stepping behind the scenes at KBIA updating us all on the many fun activities planned and capturing the spirit of summer at the beach.

Susan moved with her family from the greater Boston area to Maine in 2012, and since then has enjoyed her time as a stay-at-home mom of her two young children.  She previously worked as a Project Manager for Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, and a health outcomes consulting firm in Boston.  Altlhough much of her work experience is in the public health field, Susan has also worked as a communications assistant at the Portsmouth Chamber of Commerce.  She immensely enjoyed that line of work, and continued to enjoy writing and public outreach as her career moved into the public health field.  Susan is excited for the opportunity to work with KBIA, and feels that it will be a wonderful way to become even more involved in the Kennebunk community.

Her main passion is spending time with her family down at the beach year round.  Now residing in Kennebunk with her husband Brian and their children Cailyn and Colby, Susan is looking forward to immersing herself in summers of fun at KBIA.

Elizabeth, our front desk extraordinaire, is now also our Event Coordinator, happily ensuring all the summer’s exciting events are running smoothly.
