Parking, Pick-ups, and Drop-offs

Please help us keep KBIA safe for everyone and stay with your vehicles in the designated pick-up and drop-off zone in front of the pool.  It is crucial to stay within the white paint — there is no spot before and after the crosswalk to the playground to enhance visibility of kids crossing the street.

The drop-off/pick-up zone is also for emergency vehicles, so drivers must remain with their cars at all times.  Kennebunk police have and will continue to ticket both areas.  We appreciate your cooperation in helping us stay safe, and move traffic along in that busy section!

Daily Open Swim

Can’t get enough of the water now that it’s finally summer?  Us either! KBIA offers a supervised free swim session on a daily basis, Monday through Friday, June 25 to August 17.  Half-hour free-swim sessions are available for all children ages 4 and older, enrolled in other KBIA classes that week.

Join us for a splashing good time every day:
12 to 12:30 PM
3:30 to 4 PM

Bathrooms & Changing Rooms

When nature calls…we have bathrooms!  Two public restrooms are located behind Smith House.  If all you need is a place to change into your bathing suit, please use one of the four family-sized changing rooms located in the back of the white Adventures Tent.

Sail the Cove! Kayak the Cove!

There’s nothing quite like the feel of setting sail in the Cove — or paddling its gentle waters. We invite members of all ages to enjoy KBIA’s spectacular waterfront during our scheduled “Open Sail” sessions, which are available (and free!) to all KBIA members (parents, grandparents and children) who would like to independently enjoy the Cove in one of KBIA’s sailboats or kayaks. Previous sailing and kayaking experience is required, as well as a life jacket and closed-toe water shoes.

Let’s get this summer started!

Summer is here and we are so happy!  We officially open the KBIA office on Monday, June 18th, and KBIA classes commence on Season Opening Day, Monday, June 25th. Thanks to our hard-working faculty and staff, we are ready to welcome new faces and welcome back old friends. And if you want to bring a friend, please do!  As always, Week 1 requires NO membership fee to register for classes, so this is a great time to share the KBIA experience or even check us out for the first time. See you Opening Day!

An homage to the past

Article Image
Today, we know the Smith House as a busy part of the KBIA campus where art, woodworking, drama classes and bi-weekly movie nights are held during summers. This building holds a lot of history within its walls, built over 100 years ago in the 1900s by Willie O. Littlefield as the Dipsy Baths, a full-service private bathhouse with 100 changing rooms and showers that ‘ran into the sea.’ Providing a place for summer residents and locals to change into their swimming apparel, the building also housed a small store, barber shop, and an upstairs pool room. The Dipsy Bathhouse was one of the only places to offer food in the Kennebunk Beach area, with a takeout window where beachgoers could order lunch or snacks – now used as the KBIA snack shack.

The Dipsy Bathhouse stayed a steady feature on Mother’s Beach for over 50 years, when in the 1960’s a developer from Massachusetts purchased the Dipsy Baths. KBIA at this time had just acquired Strong Cottage, and realizing the importance of this adjacent piece of real estate, Gordon Smith, a strong supporter and fixture at KBIA, wrangled a deal with the developer and KBIA became the new owners. Renovations commenced on the building immediately and it was ready for classes the following summer. Twenty years later in 1981, the Dipsy Baths were renamed the Smith House in salute to Gordon Smith’s efforts.

There have been many variations of the Dipsy Baths signs over the last century, with one pair of green and white signs on display inside the Strong Cottage office. In homage to our past, we have now placed the signs back onto the side of Smith House.

We hope you come by to say hello this summer season, and take a moment to soak in a little history.

All are welcome to join!  It is the continuous generosity of KBIA members and friends that enable us to provide children the same safe, fun, beautiful, and nurturing learning environment that has been provided to generations of children, while allowing us the opportunity to grow and improve our programs.

Annual membership fees help support KBIA’s programs. We’re proud to be a place that lets children be children and lets them explore the vast and rugged beauty of the Coast of Maine in summer, while building knowledge, leadership, and respect for themselves, others and their world. We’re particularly proud of the scholarships we offer to children in the Kennebunk area who might otherwise not be able to take advantage of our KBIA enrichment programs, and of our many other community endeavors.

Membership fees remain a crucial element for us to achieve operational breakeven, to allow us to provide local scholarships, and to keep the cost of classes down.

All of us at KBIA thank you for your continued backing and generous contributions. We would not be able to provide exemplary programming and quality instruction without your generosity.

2018 CIT & Counselor Newsletter

News from the Beach
February 8, 2018
Join Us for a KBIA Summer!

Banner Image

Join us in making summer the best time of year for the kids at KBIA!

We are now accepting applications for our Junior/Senior Counselor positions for 2018. Anyone interested in the CIT program can fill out the CIT Interest Form and register for the class through the office – all are welcome! Office registrations for CIT classes will begin April 1, 2018. Our season will run eight weeks from June 25 to August 17. Paperwork is now available on our website.

Counselors and CITs play an important role at KBIA, both in supporting our mission and in helping provide exceptional experiences for our children. Teens enjoy all the benefits of KBIA’s unique environment as they learn valuable skills, earn important certifications and build lasting relationships.

Hired by Executive Director Martin Lodish, Junior and Senior Counselors are paid employees of KBIA, so they must be at least 15 years or older (or be turning 15 on a summer birthday and have completed ninth grade). Counselors help support our programs, keep our children safe and carry out the mission of KBIA. We make every effort to match positions with counselors’ interests, where possible, and give hiring preference to former CITs. Deadline for first consideration is March 15.

Managed by our Counselor In Training Coordinator, our CIT program gives 13- and 14-year-olds the opportunity to work together, develop leadership skills and grow into role models for our younger campers (children who turn 13 over the summer and have completed the 7th grade are eligible to be CITs). CITs must enroll in at least two weeks of consecutive classes to be considered. Interested teens should submit their paperwork as soon as possible.

For more details, read about the experience by clicking here.

We look forward to hearing from applicants!

2018!! It is hard to believe that KBIA is preparing to open in less than five months! Five months until we are able to enjoy that wonderful spot – KBIA. I think of that “spot” often. I will be ending my 15th year on the Board of Directors in August of this summer. Sadly, but understandably, our bylaws require that I step down. Upon some reflection, I have realized that KBIA is not just a location or a group of buildings. Although, a new pool, a new playground and significantly improved facilities do contribute to the KBIA experience, I believe KBIA is an attitude. It is a way of life. When I pass Sea Fields Condos and the backside of Webhannet Golf Club and I round the turn to pass KBIA, I smile and anxiously look to my right to see who may be at KBIA that day. I hope I see my granddaughter Sammie coming out of the pool or from under the tent. My thoughts go back to 1994 when my wife Jayne and I built our home on Beach Avenue. Our daughters Katie and Kelley were 9 and 7 years old. KBIA was described in magical, transformational terms. I cannot imagine what our 24 years in Kennebunk would look like without KBIA. It was the center of our children’s social world and soon became the center of Jayne’s and my social world. We made as many friends as our children. Friendships that still hold strong today.

I know I am making this personal. We all have these wonderful stories. KBIA creates that personal bond with each and every one of us. It is the fact that our relationships are so personal that makes the KBIA bond so strong. As I mentioned, KBIA is an attitude, a way of life, and that rings true. The community spirit, the values that we encourage and support in our mission is all built around the positive development of each and every child. Even the activities created for adult members, parents and grandparents are done so with the focus on strengthening the community spirit for the benefit of the children. As Hartley Lord, a long-time supporter of KBIA, famously said when asking for support of KBIA, “It is for the little children”. Of course, we also need to focus on the facilities, the equipment and the programming. Without our terrific staff and team members, we will not thrive. KBIA has been and is blessed with wonderful benefactors and competent volunteers. We are most fortunate.

We have done a lot to improve KBIA but it is the culture, the people, and our values that endure time and again. When, a camper’s family came upon difficult times and money was not available for KBIA, we were able to assist with scholarship money so that the child could continue their summer experience. When, money was needed for a disabled motor for one of our boats, donations were sought and raised to pay for the replacement. When, a physically challenged camper needed more personal attention, our staff answered the need quickly and completely for the entire summer. These are the things I have been thinking about and why I am so proud of KBIA. Serving KBIA for 15 years has been an honor.

Yes, it is for the children. So, I encourage current Board members, future Board members and the KBIA community at large, please, keep building upon the spirit of KBIA. Please, participate with KBIA. Whether you volunteer your time, your abilities or your financial support – your participation is needed. At a time when some of your interests get crowded out, please, continue to be a part of KBIA. Preserve this special “spot” in the hearts and minds of the children for generations to come.

With this in mind, I invite you to join KBIA as a member.  Our 2018 membership form can be found on our website hereMembership fees support KBIA in the year they are given and remain crucial to the financial health and stability of our nonprofit organization. Please also consider a donation to your choice of our scholarship fund, facilities fund, and/or our general fund in addition to your membership. Please visit the “How to Donate” section of our website for more details on each fund. Thank you.

Respectfully,
David Sweetser
President of the KBIA Board of Directors

2018 Letter from Martin Lodish

News from the Beach
January 17, 2018
A Letter from Executive Director Martin Lodish

Article Image

I first stepped foot on the KBIA campus in March of 2009 – and this will be my tenth summer at KBIA. Over my tenure, we completed the largest capital campaign in our 107 year history, raising well over one million dollars, allowing us to replace the pool and playground, add to our endowment, and set up allocated funds for future use. What I am most proud of though, is rising to the challenge of keeping KBIA’s culture of inclusiveness, friendliness, and the balance between informality, safety, and structure strong. I have seen children who were learning to swim in our pool go on to become lifeguards, children who were learning to sail Optis become sailing instructors – over the past decade I have witnessed what we do here at KBIA come full circle. KBIA has always been a place for children to explore, be challenged, and make friends. I have met and gotten to know countless parents, grandparents, and most importantly children – and I feel privileged to continue to be allowed to navigate the course we have chosen for KBIA.

A few new changes are coming our way in the 2018 season. We have added a keelboat sailing class where instructors will take small groups of children out in sailboats for longer sails over a series of days. This is a great class for older children who are new to sailing, or for those who want a different experience.

We are excited to offer more opportunities for members to socialize and meet one another. Our extended family bonfire and barbeque nights were such a success we will be scheduling more this summer, so grab some games and apps and meet us at the beach! Another family friendly event we are thrilled to add to the social calendar is the family day at the KBIA pool, adults can cannonball off the diving board too (trust me, it’s fun). Additionally, we are planning to have coffee and treats for adults on Fridays – after all, why can’t it be a fun Friday for the grown-ups too? More details on all classes and events will be in the 2018 Registration Guide due out at the end of March.

I may be more eager than the kids to get back on campus this summer, not only to get the season underway but to see the new updates to campus. Our sea wall adjacent to the cove is being repaired, new siding and trim has been added to the Smith House, and we will be unveiling a special detail with a nod to our historical roots. This is all made possible by the generosity of our donors and members, and we are forever grateful. We hope you come visit us Opening Day on June 25.

In the meantime, we invite you to join KBIA as a member. Our 2018 membership form can be found on our website here. Membership fees support KBIA in the year they are given and remain crucial to the financial health and stability of our nonprofit organization while still giving scholarships.

Your generosity, in any amount, helps us make a difference both in this community and our children’s lives. In addition to our membership, please consider a donation to our scholarship fund, facilities fund, and/or our general fund. Visit the “How to Donate” section of our website to find out more about each fund. All donations help support our beloved KBIA, a place where children explore the vast and rugged beauty of the Maine coast in summer, while building knowledge, leadership, and respect for themselves, others and their world.

Sincerely,

Martin Lodish
Executive Director

‘Tis the season for gratitude, for giving, for good cheer! Every day at KBIA we are grateful for the contributions of our members, volunteers, and donors…YOU are what keeps us going, and the children are the direct beneficiaries.  On this day – November 28th – we have been called to action…#GivingTuesday is a day we are asked to give in whatever capacity we are able, to a cause, an organization, to a greater good.  We hope you consider KBIA on this day.

GIVING TUESDAY

SCHOLARSHIP FUND

Article Image

Every child deserves a summer full of learning, mentors, and friends.  But not every child has the means.  Each year we have traditionally offered 20 to 25 children the opportunity to experience a KBIA summer — free of charge and discreetly issued. We are able to set the number of scholarships based directly on the amount of money donated specifically to scholarships. Donating to our scholarship fund is donating an invaluable experience to a child who will forever cherish their time spent at KBIA.

FACILITIES

Article Image

Updating and maintaining KBIA facilities is necessary to keep our campus and programs running smoothly.  Your donation to the facilities fund will support some upcoming off-season projects including new siding and trim to the Smith House and repairing the sea wall along the cove.

GENERAL FUND

Let us decide! This donation fund can be accessed for a multitude of projects for the benefit of KBIA summer enrichment activities.

All donations help support a place that lets children be children and lets them explore the vast and rugged beauty of the Coast of Maine in summer, while building knowledge, leadership, and respect for themselves, others and their world.

What better gift to give, than the experience of KBIA? No donation is too small, and all contributions go towards your choice of scholarships, facilities, and/or the general fund.

Let’s take a closer look:
  • Scholarships: For children who otherwise would not be able to attend KBIA, they are invited to learn to sail, make crafts, go island exploring, play tennis, learn to swim…among the many amazing summer activities at KBIA.  And not only do they have access to classes, but they are forming friendships and making memories to last a lifetime.  Each year we have traditionally offered 20 to 25 children the opportunity to experience a KBIA summer — free of charge and discreetly issued.  Donating to our scholarship fund is donating an invaluable experience to a child who will forever cherish their time spent at KBIA.

  • Facilities: Our unique facility is located at the base of a small peninsula known as Lord’s Point between Mother’s Beach and a sheltered cove. Keeping up with building and property repairs, updates, and improvements is a constant project aiming to make the campus safe, convenient, and enable our classes to be the most they can be.

  • General:  Let KBIA management and the Board of Directors decide where the funds are best allocated. This donation fund is accessed for a multitude of projects for the benefit of KBIA summer enrichment activities.

Please consider a year-end donation so that KBIA can continue to provide “summers of experience” here at the beach!

Hello Again!

Article Image
Hello again! It feels like just yesterday we were bidding fond farewells at the end of a fantastic summer season.  Two months into another school year and at the cusp of the holiday season, we always have KBIA at the forefront.  The boats have been tucked away, the Adventures tent rolled up, the odds and ends packed up, but we are still here planning for another memorable season.  Board members have gathered together to discuss exciting events for next summer’s calendar, the 2017 Membership Directory is in the making, and we are still accepting memberships and donations through the end of the year.

Last Call for 2017 Memberships!

It is not too late to join KBIA as a member and all are welcome to join!  The 2017 Membership Form can be found here and can be submitted via email at [email protected] or please fax: 207-510-8058.

Generations of children have benefited from the continuous generosity of KBIA members and friends.  Donations fund the expansion and improvment of our programs, all the while providing the same safe, fun, beautiful, and nurturing learning environment that every child deserves.

Annual membership fees help support KBIA’s programs. We’re proud to be a place that lets children be children and lets them explore the vast and rugged beauty of the Coast of Maine in summer.  Children spend their time at KBIA building knowledge, leadership, and respect for themselves, others and their world.

Land donated by a long time supporter of KBIA is now for sale. The KBIA Board has looked at uses for the land over the years, and have decided that KBIA cannot effectively use it for programming as we had originally hoped.

Nicely wooded 19+ acre lot, only 1.6 miles to Mother’s Beach, KBIA, Webhannet Golf and all that the Kennebunks have to offer.  At $85,900, this parcel has great potential.  Additional details on the land can be found here.  If interested, please contact Steve Brunette at [email protected] or 207-850-8990
