Looking ahead

Help us meet our *match*
KBIA friends launch matching program for scholarships

Scholarships are key to the mission of KBIA: to provide safe, supportive and exciting Summers of Discovery for children and their families, among others.

As a fitting finale to our 100th Capital Campaign, we have launched a matching program for our endowment fund that helps us support scholarships. From now until the end of summer, every new $2 given to KBIA will be matched by $1, generously funded by friends of KBIA. This anonymous group has donated $41,667 (WOW!), so we have the potential to collectively raise $125,000 – all to help kids in this community for many, many Summers of Discovery to come.

Pledges can be made now and paid by the end of the calendar year. KBIA’s endowment fund is now managed by a professional firm under the direction of the Board of Directors’ Endowment Committee, and this year KBIA will offer $32,000 in scholarships to local children.

We will be asking all members, supporters and friends of KBIA to dig deep and support the 100th Capital Campaign in its final year so we can ensure the opportunity is available to all children for many summers to come.

Happy Holidays!
Article Image
We are so grateful for YOU, our members, our community and supporters that allow us to continue our amazing “summers of discovery” for children. Thanks to you, we served a record number of children (669) and families (355) in 2013 while making a significant contribution to our Kennebunk community — a new $105,000 playground, entirely installed by more than 250 volunteers! What a year we have had in 2013!

How can you help us continue our good work for generations to come? For starters, please join us in 2014!  Membership information will be available online and mailed by Jan. 30.

Then, consider joining our staff or volunteering your time at our community events! Applications for our Counselor-in-Training and Counselor/Staff positions will be available online on Jan. 30 as well.   In the meantime, we are still accepting year-end donations. Fundraising during this holiday helps ensure our future. We accept donations by check, credit card or even stock. Your donation helps support our core programs as well as scholarships to provide local children opportunities they might not otherwise have. All donations are greatly appreciated and recognized.

As we close out our 103rd year at the beach, we say Happy New Year to all and to all a great 2014!

We give thanks
Article Image
As we begin this Thanksgiving week, we pause to reflect on our 2013 season. At KBIA, we have so much for which to be thankful: a beautiful seaside location, 103 years of tradition, our KBIA family and, of course, a new community playground installed last June. We thank you for your loyal support and dedication toward this communtiy cause; only together can we continue to carry out our mission at the beach. Each of us — staff, counselors, children, board members, volunteers and donors — have played a role in our success, and we thank you for your contributions. This Thanksgiving, we are truly grateful for you! Thank you!

Passing on the gift of KBIA

We are so thankful for our generous donors this holiday season. Since September we have received a cumulative $3,000 in donations specifically for 2014 scholarships. The Board of Directors has increased that amount fourfold, allowing KBIA to offer $12,000 more in scholarships next year. Each year we have traditonally offered 13 to 15 children the opportunity to experience a KBIA summer — free of charge and discreetly issued. Seperate but part of the 100th Anniversary Capital Campaign, we are raising funds for our endowment to permanently provide for increased scholarships at KBIA. Please consider a year-end donation to our cause so that KBIA can continue to provide “summers of experience” here at the beach!

For information on donating toward the cause this holiday season, visit the “Support Us” page on our website. To read about one scholarship child’s “amazing” experience learning to surf, flip and make duct-tape wallets, read Zach’s story.

Off-season projects at KBIA

Back here at KBIA, it’s just us and the winter winds blowing across Mother’s Beach and The Cove. As Martin plots out our 2014 season, Jessica is wrapping up the administrative and office duties for the year, and Laura is chronicling our “News from the Beach” and other communications.

Meanwhile, taking advantage of the quiet campus is Kennebunk contractor Andrew Rimmer, hammering away on his list of property upgrades due to be complete before Opening Day 2014. Among the more notable projects is removing the kitchen in the CIT room, which will next year become the Nature room. Our Counselor-in-Training program will swap places with the old Nature space. Upstairs, we will add art sinks and remove the wall between the two Pottery & Sculpture rooms, a renovation that will allow us to increase space in our often-sold-out classes there. That will also allow us to increase capacity in our Bundle programs, also usually at capacity with a waiting list. We think it’s a winning project for everyone!

As summer fades into fall

“though summer turns to winter / and the present disappears / the laughter we were glad to share / will echo through the years.”

These popular song lyrics always seem to ring especially true here at KBIA. Closing out the season is always an emotional time for us as we look back at the fun and friendships shared and hope we carry it forward as we head back to school and back to business.
Speaking of business, we are happy to report our 2013 summer was another record-breaking season. KBIA provided nearly 350 families “safe, supportive and exciting Summers of Discover” — up  from our previous 330 families in 2012. It was also our second year of a record number of children in our classes and the overall number of classes they attended over our eight weeks of summer. We’re also proud to have done this without increasing class fees from 2012!
This was our fourth straight year of maintaining an operational break-even, meaning our class and membership fees supported our operation costs. This also means all campaign contributions —  every donation we receive — fund  capital projects or our endowment that supports scholarships. Think of our new playground, a shining example of the community we build when we all share our time, talents and treasure!

Now that you have had a chance to reflect on your family’s summer, what did you and your family like most at KBIA? What can we improve on next year? In the spirit of open dialogue, we want to know how we may serve our members even better in the future. We invite you to gather your thoughts and send them to Executive Director Martin Lodish.

As we look back at 2013, it only makes us more excited to serve you and your family again in 2014. See you at the Beach next summer!

Steering the ship
Board of Directors adds new members

KBIA wouldn’t and couldn’t run without the year-round efforts of its volunteer Board of Directors. In addition to working behind the scenes on everything from policy to the playground, members also meet quarterly as a group to help steer the organization. At August’s meeting our Board of Directors welcomed new members John Bauman, Chad Walier, Donna Smythe Wilson and Susan Rundquist Palmer. We thank you in advance for taking on this challenge, and thank all members of the board for their tireless dedication to KBIA.

Congratulations to our August award-winners

Always a bittersweet ending to a season, we concluded our 2013 with KBIA’s biannual BBQ & Awards ceremony on Aug. 17. All children received participation ribbons, some received KBIA “wedges” or plaques for those who exemplify the KBIA spirit in attitude and accomplishment, while a select few earned their way into KBIA history. For these top honors, winners’ names are engraved on our traditional “silver ware,” which are on display in the office for all to see. Those winners were:

Hartley Lord Cup for Seamanship: Ryan Palmer
Eagle Rock Yacht Club Officer’s Cup: Jimmy Mitchell
Eagle Rock Yacht Club Hartley Lord Cup: Clara Harter
Eagle Rock Yacht Club Friendship Cup: Chloe Matthews
Sisters Gerold and Vincent Art Award: Ella Wilner
Feldman Art Award: Annie McFeetors
Keepers of the Cove: Chloe Shea and Danny Belanger
Griswold Tray: Jullian Felvinvi
Jane Wydra Award: Chelsea Cardner
President’s Cup: Emma Trenchard
Waterhouse Cup: T.J. Jurevic
Calder Cup: Elizabeth Lapointe, Ian Corbett and Christina Metcalf

Coming soon to KBIA members!

One of the great things about KBIA is the variety of places from which we all come, all united by our love for KBIA. Children make new friends and those friends become pen pals until they meet at KBIA again. Parents, too, meet new friends through the years and want to stay in touch in the off-season. To foster such friendships, we annually publish a Membership Directory with families’ names, addresses, phone numbers and e-mails — in other words, everything children and their parents need to stay in touch. Following tradition, it also  includes a listing of winners’ names from our July and August awards ceremonies. The directory is in production right now, and members will receive the booklet in the mail by early October.

Relive the joy of summertime on our Facebook page! We have compiled photo albums of many of our 50+ classes we offer, and we invite you to share them with your children, friends and family. We also invite you to share your photos from KBIA this summer so we may share them on our Facebook, page, our website as well as future promotional KBIA materials. Please send them as .jpgs by e-mail to  Communication Coordinator Laura Smith

Want to be a KBIA counselor?

WHile we’re already thinking ahead to next season, in January we will begin the hiring process for Counselors; applications will be posted on our websiteJunior and senior counselors  support our programs, keep our children safe, and carry out the mission of KBIA. We make every  effort to match positions with counselors’ interests, where possible, and give hiring preference to former CITs.

Season finale: August BBQ & Awards this Saturday

Please join us at KBIA this Saturday, August 17, for the second and final barbecue and awards ceremonies. Just like our July event, our August BBQ and Awards Ceremony will kick off with assorted watersports in the pool for various ages:

10:00 AM:  5- to 6-year-olds
10:30 AM: 7- to 8-year-olds
11:00 AM: 9 and older
11:30 AM: Free swim for all ages

At 10 AM, we will launch our new student-built boat (details below).

At 11 AM, we will hold our annual Membership Meeting under the white tent (details below).

At 12 PM, KBIA volunteers will serve up a barbecue lunch (hot dogs, hamburgers or veggie burgers, chips, cake and drinks.)

At 1 PM, we will begin the awards portion of the day, handing out various KBIA “wedges” and traditional KBIA honors.

Be sure to check next week’s e-newsletter for a list of the winners!

Help us launch new boat

For eight weeks our KBIA kids have been building a boat. Yes, that’s right, a real boat that will float! From bow to stern to the final paint, it is almost done and ready to launch. Please join us at 10 AM Saturday for an official boat launching ceremony in the cove. Will it be named Poseidon or Narwhal? We’re tallying the votes from those who had a hand in its making, and we will announce the name Saturday. Please join us!

Membership Meeting is Saturday

All KBIA members are invited to our annual meeting at 11 AM Saturday under the tent. This is an opportunity to share thoughts on the season, air ideas for next summer, and ask questions of the Board and/or Executive Director. We will also introduce new members of our Board of Directors. Afterward, please plan to stay for a BBQ lunch at noon, followed by the Awards Ceremony at 1.

Membership Directory due out this fall

Our annual Membership Directory, due out in early September, makes it easy to stay in touch with your KBIA friends and family throughout the year. Our annual publications lists our trophy winners as well as the 2013 list of KBIA staff and families’ names, addresses, e-mails and phone numbers. In order for it to be as accurate as possible, please make sure the office has your latest contact information. And if you haven’t joined yet, you have until Friday!

Wear your heart on your sleeve … now 20% off!
Now through Saturday, everything in our KBIA store is 20 percent off. We have hats, long- and short-sleeved T-shirts, fleeces, umbrellas, sweatshirts, sweatpants and so much more to help you remember the good times at KBIA all year long. The store, located next to the office in Strong Cottage, is open during regular office hours.

Lost-and-found overfloweth

Towels and life-vests and flip-flops … oh my! Our lost and found is overflowing with some things you are surely missing. Before leaving campus this week, please stop by the gray bin, located outside the garage door of Smith House. Items left behind after Friday will be donated to Goodwill.

Don’t be left out from Movie Night

Due to overwhelming popularity, Movie Night has reached capacity the last two weeks. We don’t like to have to turn folks away, and we strongly suggest parents preregister their kiddos in the office as soon as possible for this week’s movie, “A Bug’s Life.” Capacity is 55 children.

Our final week at KBIA

TWEEN NIGHT: 6 to 8 PM Tuesday

Swimming right along …
Article Image
Did you feel it in the air this morning? That cool, unmistakably fall air blowing by the beach was a wake-up call for us all; we only have two weeks left to our summer here at KBIA, and we still have so much more to do! We have laser tag tonight, a Sea Dogs game for tweens this Tuesday, a pool party with pizza on Thursday for the teens, and the fourth annual Reid Sacco Family Regatta on Sunday. That’s all in addition to a week’s worth of summer sun and fun in the variety of classes we offer every day. With so much going on, we hope you’ll join us in making the most of the rest of this summer.

Set sail with us this Sunday

Sailors and spectators alike are invited to KBIA’s fourth annual Reid Sacco Family Regatta on Sunday. The day starts with a skipper meeting at 12 PM, followed by sailing at 12:30. Interested participants should register in the office to reserve a KBIA boat or bring their own boat to launch between 285 and 292 Beach Avenue. Due to the shallow nature of the cove, even at high tide, sailors should use an Opti, Laser, Taz or Chickadee watercraft.

A $10 suggested donation per sailor will benefit the Reid Sacco Foundation. The regatta honors a longtime KBIA student and instructor who died of sarcoma at age 20 in 2005. For information on the Reid Sacco Foundation, visit www.reidsaccofoundation.org.

Swim Meet a success, thanks to our team of volunteeers

A cheering crowd and new swim flags flying high over the pool created a festive atmosphere for our first home swim meet on Friday. Twenty-two KBIA swimmers of all ages competed against area swimmers (six swimmers from the Sanford YMCA Titans and seven swimmers from Saco Sport and Fitness) in all variety of styles, bringing home medals and ribbons for their efforts. Thanks to a whole team of volunteers, we made it a swimming success. Thank you!
For a peek at the event, see our photo album on Facebook

‘Paint the Beach’
at the beach

There’s no better setting for “Paint the Beach” than the beach! At least that’s how we felt Saturday night for our second annual art show and sale with Heartwood College of Art. We had a great crowd out for some art and light fare served up under our tent — even the predicted showers held off for the event! In case you missed it, check out our Facebook album of artwork. Some of the pieces remain to be sold for $400, with the artist receiving half, and KBIA and Heartwood splitting the remaining proceeds; check with the front office on particular pieces.

Competition in The Cove

For the sixth year, area swimmers swarmed the cove on Sunday for KBIA’s Cove Swim. This year we had 14 children compete in the 200-yard swim and 28 swimmers for the 1-mile swim.

For a complete list of swimmers and their times, visit kbia.net. To view our photo gallery, click here.

Tony tells tale of his friend Tiger

Have your heard the tale of “Tiger”? Last summer our longtime KBIA instructor Tony Viehmann made a new friend, a monarch butterfly with a broken wing. For 18 days Tony cared for his new friend — and fascinated by this beautiful creature, he captured much of their time on camera. Last fall he compiled those images, along with his tale, for a new book simply named “Tiger,” published by Depot Publishing of Kennebunk. His book is available for purchase for $15 in the KBIA store. His autograph, too? Priceless!

Explore Strawberry Island … start here

While our children more commonly visit the island by walking directly over the sand at low tide, the rocky island is also accessible to the public via our “Gateway to Strawberry Island.” KBIA’s .34-acre rocky plot on Great Hill Road provides access to Strawberry Island. Just look for our sign at 38 Great Hill Road, right next to the small plot owned by the Kennebunk Land Trust.

This week at KBIA

LASER TAG (Rescheduled from July rainout): G-Force Laser Tag at the beach, KBIA, 4 to 6 PM Monday. $24.

TWEEN NIGHT: Sea Dogs baseball game and Sea Dog biscuit, Portland, 6 to 9 PM Tuesday. $24.

MOVIE NIGHT: “Meet the Robinsons” at Smith House, 7 to 9 PM Wednesday. $7.

TEEN NIGHT: Pool Party & Pizza, KBIA, 7 to 9 PM Thursday. $24.

OPEN SAIL / KAYAK: 12 to 5 PM Saturday; free and open to members.
* Please note the Open Sail / Kayak listed for Sunday in the Registration Guide conflicts with the Reid Sacco Family Regatta; therefore, the final open sail/kayak is canceled.

Please pre-register for all events at the office so we may accurately plan for tickets and transportation. Movie Night is limited to 55 children on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Sailing along this summer

Dear

Glass half-full of half-empty? Now beginning our fifth of eight weeks at the beach, we ask ourselves the same question: Half over or half a season left to enjoy? We have had a great summer so far — so many summer memories in the making, new experiences, new accomplishments — and we trust you and your children have too. But what else do the kids want to do this summer? Now that they have had the chance to check everything out here, ask them what else they may want to try this summer. Be sure to revisit our 2013 Registration Guide to see everything we have to offer (or check it out here). That’s more than 50 offerings in total. Whatever you choose, we hope to see you back at the beach soon!

KBIA to host MIRC sailing competition this Wednesday

On Wednesday afternoon, between 11 AM and 3 PM, sailors from around the region will be racing local waters in a competitive MIRC regatta. KBIA Waterfront Director Nils Reuterdahl says the boats on the race course should be visible from the new Mother’s Beach playground during that time for all to see. This is the first time in at least five years that KBIA has the hosting honors. Around 3 PM, trophies will be awarded to the top teams, followed by a cookout for the sailors. The MIRC is a traditional regatta that is open to a group of New England sailing schools to promote healthy competition and allows the young sailors to travel to other clubs and meet new friends while showing off their talents.

Honoring our children
July award-winners named

We have many children here who excel in their areas of special interest, and we honored them at Saturday’s awards ceremony with KBIA “wedges.” For children we saw go “above and beyond,” we awarded the traditional silver-ware that has a permanent home in our office. Their names will be engraved on the plaques, forever part of our KBIA history. This year’s July award-winners include:

Nick Reszetnik for the Friendship Cup for waterfront.
Gwennie Walier for the Sisters G&V Art Award for the arts.
Razz Oppenheimer for the Feldman Award for the arts.
Natasha Bucheit for the Comelia C. Smith Swimming Award for staff.
Kathleen Kelley for Griswald Cup for tennis teaching.

‘Paint the Beach’ set for Aug. 3

Regional artists have been busy painting the coastal landscape, architecture and surrounding beauty for the second annual “Paint the Beach” art show and sale. Some 80 to 100 works of art in various mediums will be on sale next Saturday, Aug. 3.

Sponsored by both KBIA and Heartwood College of Art, show hours are 4 to 6 p.m. under the tent at KBIA. Wine and light fare will be served; admission is free.
All unframed pieces will sell for $400. Both nonprofit organizations, KBIA and Heartwood College of Art will both receive a portion of the proceeds.

What is KBIA to you?

Dear

KBIA is a 103-year-old summer enrichment and recreational program serving children ages 3 to 17. But what is KBIA to you? To local residents, KBIA is the new playground at the beach. KBIA is also summer friends. For others, KBIA is a road race or a cove swim. To visitors, KBIA is sanity during a week’s vacation at the beach. (KBIA is also that babysitter you found at the last moment). KBIA is that mom friend you met while your kids were taking swim lessons, which turned into a dinner playdate with her family.  night by the cove at our annual Seaside Celebration (coming up Saturday) or winning the class ribbon and wedges (also Saturday). Through the years we have found KBIA is many different things to many our different members. What does it mean to you? Please share your “KBIA is” story with us!

Please join us Saturday
July Watersports/BBQ/Awards, followed by Seaside Celebration

Please join us at KBIA this Saturday, July 20, for the first of our two annual barbecue and awards ceremonies. The July BBQ and Awards Ceremony will kick off with assorted watersports in the pool for various ages:

9:00 AM:  3- to 4-year-olds
9:30 AM:  5- to 6-year-olds
10:00 AM: 7- to 8-year-olds
10:30 AM: 9- to 10-year-olds
11:00 AM: 11 and older

At noon, KBIA volunteers will serve up a barbecue lunch (hot dogs and hamburgers, lemonade, iced tea, chips and cake.)

At 1 PM, we will begin the awards portion of the day, handing out various KBIA “wedges” and traditional KBIA honors.

Be sure to check next week’s e-newsletter for a list of the winners!

From 6 to 8 PM, please join us on the KBIA lawn for our sixth annual Seaside Celebration. In honor of our “older” members of this KBIA community (21 and older, please), we will be serving up cocktails and light hors d’oeuvres by the shore. Please come celebrate the summer with us. We kindly ask you RSVP by Wednesday, July 17; please email [email protected] or call the office at 967-2180.

CLYNK for KBIA

CLYNK is yet another way to help preserve our beach and help KBIA at the same time! We now have those green bags available at our office for members to pick up, fill with returnables, and redeem them at the Kennebunk Hannaford (or any CLYNK redemption center). Proceeds from KBIA-tagged bags will benefit our nonprofit organization.
CLYNK is a Maine recycling company with an innovative bottle redemption system offered exclusively in Hannaford supermarkets in Maine. CLYNK’s mission is to make recycling easier, to offer educational resources focused on recycling and to show customers how their personal recycling positively impacts our environment.

We’re off and running

It’s always better at the beach! That’s what we at KBIA think anyway — even when it sprinkles. Today we begin Week 3, and so far this season we have had our share of wet weather. Many of our outdoor adventures are weather-dependent, and we have been forced to cancel a handful of classes because conditions were unsafe (such as thunder of lightening for outdoor activities). In such cases, our office staff makes every attempt to contact registered participants; they are also only a phone call away at (207) 967-2180. To learn  more about our cancellation policy, please see Page 26 in our 2013 Registration Guide.

Now, sunny thoughts for the rest of this week, please!

Record 346 runners turn out for 1K/5K Road Race

What a great day for a race! It was hot and hazy morning at the beach, but we still hosted a record 346 registered fun-runners and racers in our 22nd annual “Day at the Beach” kids fun run and 5K race. Thank you to our many volunteers who made it all possible (they seemed to like those new volunteer t-shirts!) as well as the many friends and family who turned out on the sidelines to cheer on the crowds. You helped us “Keep Calm and Run On!”

Following the race we enjoyed food and fellowship … and trophies! For complete results, click here . For a photo  gallery of the event, click here.

Like our course? Nicole’s Run, hosted on KBIA grounds and following our same 1K and 5K route, will be held Saturday, July 27. All funds raised will benefit Caring Unlimited domestic violence prevention programs, in memory of Kennebunk mother Nicole Oliver.
