COVID-19 Update and KBIA Playground

Article Image

As part of our commitment to social distancing for the benefit of our community, KBIA will be closing the playground at Mother’s Beach until further notice to aid in COVID-19 mitigation efforts. Signage will be posted to alert the wider community.

I ask that you all honor the closure of the playground so that we can contribute to social distancing in a meaningful way at this important time. KBIA is a gathering place that is the setting for lifelong memories and so it is not easy for me to ask you to keep your distance from our buildings and structures at this time.

We know that this is a difficult time – especially for families with children. I hope that you DO take walks on the beach, enjoy the outdoors, and embrace this time with your family.

Summer will be here before we know it and I know the first day of KBIA will feel even more celebratory after this period of caution. Personally, I cannot wait to see the smiling faces of the kids coming down the slide at the playground, jumping into the pool, and walking around the Cove at low-tide.

Please stay well, and I look forward to seeing you at the beach this summer.

Best,

Mimi Fox
Executive Director

KBIA and COVID-19 Updates

Article Image

On behalf of myself, our Board President John Bauman, and the whole KBIA Board of Directors, I wanted to touch base with all of you to share with you how KBIA is responding to COVID-19. As a parent, I empathize with how you must be feeling. This is a challenging time, made even more challenging by all the “what if’s” and unknowns surrounding the situation.

Please know, that KBIA is dedicated to keeping our students, families, staff, and faculty safe. When we do open, we will be ready to do our best to provide a hygienic environment for all who visit our campus. We will focus on safety and health by keeping all visitors to our campus informed with up-to-date information and emphasizing healthy habits, including frequent handwashing.

We still have over three months until summer programming begins. As the situation evolves, so will our plans, but we also know that we have time to be ready. We will do everything we can to be ready for our 110th anniversary summer on the beach.

From all of us at KBIA – please stay healthy and I truly look forward to seeing you all at the beach this summer.

Best,

Mimi Fox
Executive Director

Calling All Counselors & CITs!

News from the Beach
January 31, 2020
Join Us for a KBIA Summer!

Join us in making summer the best time of year for the kids at KBIA!

We are now accepting applications for our Junior/Senior Counselor positions for 2020. Anyone interested in the CIT program can fill out the CIT Interest Form and register for the class through the office – all are welcome! Office registrations for CIT classes will begin March 31, 2020. Our season will run nine weeks from June 22 to August 21. Paperwork is now available on our website

Counselors and CITs play an important role at KBIA, both in supporting our mission and in helping provide exceptional experiences for our children. Teens enjoy all the benefits of KBIA’s unique environment as they learn valuable skills, earn important certifications and build lasting relationships.

COUNSELORS
Hired by Executive Director Mimi Fox, Junior and Senior Counselors are paid employees of KBIA, so they must be at least 15 years or older (or be turning 15 on a summer birthday and have completed ninth grade). Counselors help support our programs, keep our children safe and carry out the mission of KBIA. We make every effort to match positions with counselors’ interests, where possible, and give hiring preference to former CITs. Deadline for first consideration is March 15.

COUNSELOR-IN-TRAINING (CIT) PROGRAM
Managed by our Counselor In Training Coordinator, our CIT program gives 13- and 14-year-olds the opportunity to work together, develop leadership skills and grow into role models for our younger campers (children who turn 13 over the summer and have completed the 7th grade are eligible to be CITs). CITs must enroll in at least two weeks of consecutive classes to be considered. Interested teens should submit their paperwork as soon as possible. PLEASE NOTE: If this is your first time participating in the CIT program, please email the CIT Coordinator BEFORE registering at [email protected] to let us know that you will be new!

For more details, read about the experience by clicking here.

We look forward to hearing from applicants!

Letter from KBIA President 2020

A Letter from President John Bauman

Hopefully everyone is settling into the new decade well, and like myself, are looking forward to the Summer of 2020, which is only a few short months away. For KBIA, it will be a special one as this year marks our 110th Anniversary. We will be looking to celebrate the milestone at the 2020 Seaside Celebration in July!

2019 was another strong year for KBIA as we held expenses in check and programming and membership remained vibrant. This year, the camp gains a periodic extra week, so we will have nine weeks of programming as opposed to the regular eight. This will help the revenue side of things and allow us to keep any increase in fees to a minimum. Our Treasurer, John Wiseman will be sending his letter soon, which will describe our financial outlook in more detail.

Mimi and I have mentioned in previous communications that we have been working on some significant improvements to the facilities and grounds. The new bathrooms at Smith House were completed last spring and were well received by the membership and the entire community. Then in the fall, we completed rot repair, the installation of two new front doors, and a new “snack-shack” window at Smith House. Once the weather improves, we will be painting all the trim at Smith and Strong and installing brand new gutters on both! Other improvements include new picnic tables, a new pool cover, and new astro turf for the tent floor.

On the Executive Director front, on behalf of the BOD, I want to say that we are thrilled with the way Mimi has acclimated herself in her new position. She has exceeded our expectations thus far, and will continue to build on that as we move towards the 2020 season!

Lastly, I would like to thank all of you again for your loyalty and commitment to our beloved KBIA. Your continued support is crucial to the organization and is so greatly appreciated!

Best Regards,

JB

Letter from the Executive Director

There are just five more months separating us from the 110th summer in KBIA’s history! How fast time seems to fly! It feels as if it was just yesterday that I began my new position as Executive Director of KBIA, back in November, yet, it seems that I have only blinked and here I am in the year 2020, writing to you about summer programming that is fast approaching!

I am truly thrilled to be back at KBIA. Growing up in Kennebunk, my first memories of the ocean are of Mother’s Beach and the playground, and just last summer it came full circle when my daughter had her first ocean experience playing in the waves at Mother’s Beach as well. My family’s experience echoes that of so many others that have made Kennebunk Beach a part of their own family traditions for generations. Standing amongst it all has been KBIA – a gathering place long before I knew it and will continue to be for many years to come. KBIA is a wonderful institution, dedicated to providing quality programming for youth and helping to preserve the Cove and its surroundings for all children and families who visit our campus.

There are some very exciting things in the works for the summer – we have purchased two new stand up paddleboards and plan to purchase new kayaks as well. Our Board president John Bauman has been managing a significant number of facilities and grounds improvements; things will be in wonderful shape come June! There will also be a few new classes, including a mixed media inspired writing course for ages 11+, and an afternoon storytime for toddlers! We are so excited for the Annual Day at the Beach 1K and 5K. Not only are we celebrating Maine’s 200th birthday this year but it is also the 110th anniversary of our beloved KBIA. Stay tuned for race updates this spring as we are planning our best race yet! Lastly, we will be using a texting system called OneCall this summer to notify you of any weather or class cancellations as soon as possible. Of course, more details on all these updates will be in the upcoming registration guide (available online on March 31).

In this 2020 season, I hope you will return to KBIA as a member and join me in embracing the spirit of inclusiveness and stewardship that epitomizes KBIA. Membership helps to support KBIA’s operations and remains an important part of our financial health and stability as a nonprofit organization. Our 2020 membership form can be found on our website here and is also attached to this email.

Membership is a vital part of our operations, but is still just one piece of the pie. If you are so moved, instead of asking you to join at a higher membership level, KBIA welcomes donations to some of our ongoing initiatives. As a community dedicated to our local community, we fundraise annually to support two main reserves – our facilities and scholarship funds. To remain a strong and safe institution, our seaside facilities need constant attention. Likewise, to honor our commitment to the local community, our scholarship fund provides the KBIA experience to local students who embody the KBIA spirit. A donation of any amount to either of these funds would help us to make a difference in the KBIA community and the Kennebunk community at large. Please visit the “How to Donate” section of our website to learn more.

As a member, I encourage you to reach out to me. I am new in this role, but I am eager and willing to speak with you. I hope that every day of the summer I will be given the opportunity to learn new stories from families about current and past KBIA experiences – with 110 years of operations, there must be thousands! I hope to see you at KBIA this summer!

Best,

Mimi Fox
Executive Director

A Note from KBIA President

Seasons Greetings All,

A quick update from the beach! The Kennebunks were hit by a huge Nor’easter last weekend which saw soaking rain and extremely high winds and tides. The water spread over the entire property at high tide several times and dislodged the storage sheds, moved some of the small watercrafts, and seeped into the basement. Fortunately, the water did very little damage and all is restored. Big thanks to John Wiseman and our new program administrator Lorraine Aromando for helping out over the weekend.

I also wanted to take a minute to thank all of you for your continued support of our wonderful organization. Without your support KBIA would not be where we are today – about to enter our 110th year!  I look forward to working with Mimi and the board in 2020 to make KBIA even stronger and better.

Hoping that you and your families have a wonderful holiday season and a happy and healthy new year!

Warm Regards,

John Bauman

President of the KBIA Board of Directors

On this day – Giving Tuesday – we are all asked to participate in acts of kindness and generosity to help cultivate a sense of community and inclusiveness. This spirit of kindness behind Giving Tuesday is what we have been so fortunate to see at KBIA every season, for decades. This enriching community environment has supported the Cove and the people who love it for the past 110 years. The pool has been where so many kids have learned how to swim. The Cove has sparked a love of sailing for generations, and the playground has made a lasting impression on the entire community. There is no doubt that this place is special.

On this day – we ask you to share your personal stories of how KBIA has made a positive impact. I am a firm believer that every experience helps to support the person you ultimately grow to be and we want to hear about how KBIA has touched your life. No matter how big or small the memory – please share your #kbiastory this holiday season.

We welcome posts onto our Facebook page (be sure to use the hashtag #kbiastory in your post!) or you can also email your stories to [email protected].

Thank you for being a part of our #kbiastory!

Fall Update from KBIA President

Fall Update from KBIA President

Article Image
Fall Greetings Members of KBIA,

I hope you all had a nice weekend and are prepping up for a great Thanksgiving. I wanted to reach out with an update before the holidays. Mimi has settled in beautifully in her new Executive Director role and has been hard at work hiring staff and putting the final touches on the membership directory. She will be following up with her own update later in the week.

On the facilities front, I reported last summer that we were going to be replacing the floor in Smith House. However, after having our contractors examine the existing floor, it appears the work we did back in 2011 is holding up very well and it is not necessary to replace at this time. With the funds that were earmarked for that project, we are going to tackle an extensive punch list of items that need to be addressed. We have already replaced the two badly rusted doors at Smith and are putting in a new “snack shack” window this week. We also have repaired all the rotted trim, and are hoping for a fresh coat of paint and installation of new gutters before the weather turns. We will be doing the same at Strong Cottage in the spring.

In addition to the two houses, some of the other projects planned in the new year include a new bubble wrap pool cover, repairing the pool gate, new steps to the beach from the playground, and new flooring in the Strong Cottage reading room.

Also, our newly formed Programming Committee is working on new class ideas and will be sending out a survey to get membership input on a variety of topics. Finally, the Finance Committee will be wrapping up what looks to be a very positive year for KBIA, and we will be turning our focus to the 2020 budget after the first of the year!

Hoping that you and your families have a wonderful Thanksgiving and a happy and healthy holiday season!

Warm Regards,

John Bauman
President of the KBIA Board of Directors

Hello again! I am thrilled to be back working within the KBIA community – it truly feels like coming home. This is the first of many messages I will be sending to you, but this one is particularly exciting because it is my first as Executive Director! We have been working diligently behind the scenes during this off season to get the 2020 summer planning underway. There are many new developments in the works, including some new kayaks on the horizon, and I’m happy to share that the new membership directory should also be arriving in your mailboxes soon (if it is not there already)!

I truly hope to get to know all of you better over the next year. Please know that my “door” is always open, whether it be an e-mail during the winter months, or you’d like to pop by the office once we are open for our 2020 summer season. Being a part of KBIA has always been about community and I look forward to building on the passion, dedication, and warmth of our community alongside you.

Introducing…

Article ImageI am so pleased to announce the addition of our new Program Administrator, Lorraine Aromando. You may already know her from KBIA, as she has been with us for the past 10 years teaching surfing, kayaking, and stand up paddle boarding. During the off season, in addition to her work at KBIA, she teaches at a private school in the Portland area. Lorraine, her husband Ron, and their three dogs reside in Kennebunk, and enjoy fishing and surfing the Maine coast.

Please join me in a warm congrats to Lorraine – we are excited for her new role in our KBIA family!

Every year, KBIA strives to make a difference in the lives of children, parents, counselors, faculty, and staff…every summer, for 110 years.

In the spirit of Giving Tuesday, this year, KBIA is asking you to share your #kbiastory. Maybe your family has been coming here for decades or maybe last year was your first summer. We want to hear how KBIA has made a difference your life.

Be sure to check out our Facebook page on Giving Tuesday, December 3rd, for ways to engage with us on this day via social media or send me an email at [email protected]. I cannot wait to hear how your families came to KBIA and how the community has touched your lives throughout the years!

Until We Meet Again

Article Image

It was January 2009 when I first came across a job posting for the Executive Director of KBIA. At the time, I had never heard of KBIA before. KBIA has been a huge part of my professional and personal life for over a decade and today marks my last official day at KBIA.

My youngest son learned to swim in the old KBIA pool, my daughter’s first job was at KBIA, and my older son became enchanted with surfing at KBIA. The sheer beauty of the location consistently amazes me – but it is the people that make the place special.

I have been fortunate to work with wonderful faculty and counselors – and work with numerous members who serve on KBIA’s all-volunteer board. The Board thinks of KBIA all year long and has encouraged me, mentored me, and compelled me to cultivate KBIA as the place it inherently is, and always will be — a wonderful place to be a child.

I am particularly thankful to have been able to work with some wonderful folks who have served as President of the Board during my tenure: Andy Harrington, Dave Stevenson, Seana Wood, Shannon Beer, David Sweetser, and John Bauman. Additionally, I have been supported by three wonderful individuals as the Program Administrator: Judy Jurevic, Mimi Meserve (now Mimi Fox) and Jessica Meserve.

It is bittersweet as I write to the community for the last time as Executive Director. But, I am excited to observe KBIA from afar, and to see what the next stage of its growth will be. I have complete confidence that Mimi will do an amazing job, as I have seen firsthand her work ethic, love for KBIA, and her passion for teaching and children.

My personal information (address, email, and cell) will be included in the Membership Directory – and Mimi will always know where to reach me if you need to find me.

I hope to see you at the Beach,

–Martin
