Summer breeze

Article Image
The summer isn’t over yet! There is still time to schedule any classes your child hasn’t tried out yet, still frienships to be made, new skills to learn…summer adventures await! If you’re just joining us this week, we are so excited to see you!  Don’t forget we have free swim twice a day, check out the KBIA store, join our family bonfire night on Wednesday, and either participate in or cheer on the annual Reid Sacco Family Regatta this Saturday.  Let’s make the most of the last two weeks of summer at KBIA!

KBIA Swim Meet
This Friday!
Article ImageOn Friday, August 10th, KBIA is hosting a swim meet from 6 to 8 PM at the KBIA pool.  Only the KBIA swim team will be competing and we will be dividing ourselves into four teams. If your child has participated in swim team at any point this summer, they are eligible to participate in the swim meet. If your child has not participated in swim team but would still like to participate in the meet, you must ask Anu’s permission and your child must prove they can swim one full length of the pool.

Please see Anu at the pool before Friday to let her know if you would like your child to participate in the swim meet and what events they are comfortable swimming. Your child may also speak with Anu on their own. We also love spectators, so come cheer on your friends!!

Extend the gift of “summer”

Article Image

KBIA is truely a unique experience, offering children the opportunity to pick and choose classes, tailoring to their specific interests.  We are proud to run such an extensive variety of programs year after year – from surfing, sailing, kayaking, to reading, drama, pottery, to swim team, golfing, tennis, woodworking…and so much more…there is something for everyone.  We owe these fantastic summers at KBIA to the generosity of members and donors.

Please help us keep the spirit of summer alive for children who are unable to attend KBIA without assistance.  For every $500 donated to the KBIA scholarship fund, we are able to invite a child to attend KBIA for a four week scholarship!  The impact of a summer spent swimming, sailing, and just “being a kid” has a lasting impression. All donations — large, small and/or online are greatly appreciated.

Membership Directory due out this fall

In order for it to be as accurate as possible, please make sure the office has your latest contact information. And if you haven’t joined yet for 2018, you have until September 1st

Remembering Reid

Sailors and spectators alike are invited to KBIA’s eighth annual Reid Sacco Family Regatta on Saturday, August 11th. The day starts with a skipper meeting at 10 AM, followed by sailing at 10:30 AM. Interested participants should register in the office to reserve a KBIA boat or bring their own boat to launch between 285 and 292 Beach Avenue. Due to the shallow nature of the cove, even at high tide, sailors should use an Opti, Laser, Taz or Chickadee watercraft.

A $10 suggested donation per sailor will benefit the Reid Sacco Foundation. The regatta honors a longtime KBIA student and instructor who died of sarcoma at age 20 in 2005. For information on the Reid Sacco Foundation, visit www.cancerinyoungadults.org/about-the-alliance/.

Getting in and out safely at KBIA

Please help us keep KBIA safe for everyone! Our pick-up/drop-off zone is designed for a quick in-and-out, and it is imperative that drivers stay with their vehicles at all times. In case of emergency, this is the only way in for response vehicles. Kennebunk police have and will continue to ticket. We appreciate your cooperation in helping us move traffic along in that busy section!

KBIA Summer Traditions

Nothing beats a mid-summer celebration! On Saturday, we started the day off with our July Watersports, Awards & BBQ.  Our most important and meaningful tradition is giving out ribbons and wedges to many smiling and encouraged children.  Wrapping up a fun-filled day, the adults of KBIA gathered by the cove for our annual Seaside Celebration.  The second half of the summer season looks to be as exciting as the first, including the Reid Sacco Family Regatta, family open swim, cove walks, weekend sailing & kayaking, movie nights, and so much more!

July Award Winners
Forever a part of KBIA history

We have many children here who excel in their areas of special interest, and we honored them at Saturday’s awards ceremony with KBIA “wedges.”  For children we saw go “above and beyond,” we awarded the traditional silver-ware that has a permanent home in our office.  Their names will be engraved, forever a part of our KBIA history.  This year’s July award-winners include:
  • Sterling Best for the Feldman Art Award
  • Gracian Burr for the Sisters Gerald & Vincent Art Award
  • Sterling Best for the Keeper of the Cove Award
  • Joey Birdsall for the Eagle Rock Yacht Club Friendship Cup
  • Colin Blais for the Griswald Cup Award for tennis staff
  • Chloe Rayer for the Cornelia C. Smith Swimming Award for staff

*All KBIA children receive participant ribbons.  If you did not pick them up after the awards, and would like to do so, please check the office.  We also have a number of “wedges,” or plaques for our award-winners not present on Saturday!

Seaside Celebration
And celebrate we did

Our eleventh annual Seaside Celebration did not disappoint.  A night overlooking the gorgeous cove, full of friends, libations, and delicous food, made for a fantastic way to celebrate the special community that we are so fortunate to be a part of. Thank you to all participants of the silent auction – winners of the pool party, bonfire BBQ, and parking spot will be contacted by office staff.  Donations to the KBIA scholarship fund are gratefully accepted and appreciated.

Volunteer Board
Get involved!

The KBIA Board of Directors is a purely volunteer run organization.  The Board is always looking for people who are interested in becoming more involved, whether by working on a committee or by sitting on the Board itself.  Please contact the office (who will forward your interest along to the appropriate committee of the Board), if you would like to nominate yourself or someone else, join a committee, or simply want to learn more about the different opportunities available.

Flying the Grand Ol’ Flag
Article Image

KBIA’s yacht club flagpole

With pride, we fly our colors everyday:  the American flag, the Canadian Flag for our visiting friends, the State of Maine flag, and the KBIA burgee.

Did You Know?
KBIA has a “yacht club flagpole,” different from a traditional flagpole, so that means the American flag flies as it would on a ship.  Consistent with U.S. flag etiquette, the national ensign flies on the gaff, which represents the stern of a boat and the position of command and honor.

Parking, Pick-ups, and Drop-offs

Please help us keep KBIA safe for everyone and stay with your vehicles in the designated pick-up and drop-off zone in front of the pool.  It is crucial to stay within the white paint — there is no spot before and after the crosswalk to the playground to enhance visibility of kids crossing the street.

The drop-off/pick-up zone is also for emergency vehicles, so drivers must remain with their cars at all times.  Kennebunk police have and will continue to ticket both areas.  We appreciate your cooperation in helping us stay safe, and move traffic along in that busy section!

Daily Open Swim

Can’t get enough of the water now that it’s finally summer?  Us either! KBIA offers a supervised free swim session on a daily basis, Monday through Friday, June 25 to August 17.  Half-hour free-swim sessions are available for all children ages 4 and older, enrolled in other KBIA classes that week.

Join us for a splashing good time every day:
12 to 12:30 PM
3:30 to 4 PM

Bathrooms & Changing Rooms

When nature calls…we have bathrooms!  Two public restrooms are located behind Smith House.  If all you need is a place to change into your bathing suit, please use one of the four family-sized changing rooms located in the back of the white Adventures Tent.

Sail the Cove! Kayak the Cove!

There’s nothing quite like the feel of setting sail in the Cove — or paddling its gentle waters. We invite members of all ages to enjoy KBIA’s spectacular waterfront during our scheduled “Open Sail” sessions, which are available (and free!) to all KBIA members (parents, grandparents and children) who would like to independently enjoy the Cove in one of KBIA’s sailboats or kayaks. Previous sailing and kayaking experience is required, as well as a life jacket and closed-toe water shoes.

Let’s get this summer started!

Summer is here and we are so happy!  We officially open the KBIA office on Monday, June 18th, and KBIA classes commence on Season Opening Day, Monday, June 25th. Thanks to our hard-working faculty and staff, we are ready to welcome new faces and welcome back old friends. And if you want to bring a friend, please do!  As always, Week 1 requires NO membership fee to register for classes, so this is a great time to share the KBIA experience or even check us out for the first time. See you Opening Day!

It’s been a busy spring for us in the office at KBIA, and we thank all of our pre-registered families for helping us in advance. Just a reminder that registration is first come, first served, and classes are filling up!  Send all required paperwork to [email protected].

We are open this week in anticipation of Opening Day, so don’t hesitate to contact us! We can answer many questions by phone, however, class registrations must be requested in writing by fax, email or regular mail. All forms necessary are available on our website at www.kbia.net. Hard copies of the 2018 Registration Guide are available through the office.

Children ages 2 and up may register for swimming, golf, sailing, kayaking, arts and nature courses (and so much more!) from June 25-29 and pay only the cost of the individual classes. Membership, which is open to the public, is otherwise required for Weeks 2-8. Campers register by the week, and classes are offered a la carte or as a “bundle” for morning and/or afternoon sessions.

Family memberships include twice-daily open swims for children, weekly beach bonfire barbecues,  and open sail/kayaks on most weekends.  KBIA also hosts an annual Seaside Celebration for adult members to enjoy cocktails and appetizers by the cove – invite your friends and family to join in the fun!

An homage to the past

Article Image
Today, we know the Smith House as a busy part of the KBIA campus where art, woodworking, drama classes and bi-weekly movie nights are held during summers. This building holds a lot of history within its walls, built over 100 years ago in the 1900s by Willie O. Littlefield as the Dipsy Baths, a full-service private bathhouse with 100 changing rooms and showers that ‘ran into the sea.’ Providing a place for summer residents and locals to change into their swimming apparel, the building also housed a small store, barber shop, and an upstairs pool room. The Dipsy Bathhouse was one of the only places to offer food in the Kennebunk Beach area, with a takeout window where beachgoers could order lunch or snacks – now used as the KBIA snack shack.

The Dipsy Bathhouse stayed a steady feature on Mother’s Beach for over 50 years, when in the 1960’s a developer from Massachusetts purchased the Dipsy Baths. KBIA at this time had just acquired Strong Cottage, and realizing the importance of this adjacent piece of real estate, Gordon Smith, a strong supporter and fixture at KBIA, wrangled a deal with the developer and KBIA became the new owners. Renovations commenced on the building immediately and it was ready for classes the following summer. Twenty years later in 1981, the Dipsy Baths were renamed the Smith House in salute to Gordon Smith’s efforts.

There have been many variations of the Dipsy Baths signs over the last century, with one pair of green and white signs on display inside the Strong Cottage office. In homage to our past, we have now placed the signs back onto the side of Smith House.

We hope you come by to say hello this summer season, and take a moment to soak in a little history.

All are welcome to join!  It is the continuous generosity of KBIA members and friends that enable us to provide children the same safe, fun, beautiful, and nurturing learning environment that has been provided to generations of children, while allowing us the opportunity to grow and improve our programs.

Annual membership fees help support KBIA’s programs. We’re proud to be a place that lets children be children and lets them explore the vast and rugged beauty of the Coast of Maine in summer, while building knowledge, leadership, and respect for themselves, others and their world. We’re particularly proud of the scholarships we offer to children in the Kennebunk area who might otherwise not be able to take advantage of our KBIA enrichment programs, and of our many other community endeavors.

Membership fees remain a crucial element for us to achieve operational breakeven, to allow us to provide local scholarships, and to keep the cost of classes down.

All of us at KBIA thank you for your continued backing and generous contributions. We would not be able to provide exemplary programming and quality instruction without your generosity.
