The season for giving and gratitude is upon us! A time of year when we are asked to look outward, to our community, and give what we can. Here at KBIA, we are in a constant state of gratefulness to our donors, members, volunteers, and staff who keep summers alive for the kids of KBIA.

On this day – November 27th – we have been called to action…#GivingTuesday is a day we are asked to give in whatever capacity we are able, to a cause, an organization, to a greater good.  We hope you consider KBIA on this day.

GIVING TUESDAY

SCHOLARSHIP FUND

Article Image

Every child deserves a summer full of learning, mentors, and friends.  But not every child has the means.  Each year we have traditionally offered 20 to 25 children the opportunity to experience a KBIA summer — free of charge and discreetly issued. We are able to set the number of scholarships based directly on the amount of money donated specifically to scholarships. Donating to our scholarship fund is donating an invaluable experience to a child who will forever cherish their time spent at KBIA.

FACILITIES FUND

Article Image

Updating and maintaining KBIA facilities is necessary to keep our campus and programs running smoothly.  Your donation to the facilities fund will support some upcoming off-season projects — last year we updated new siding and trim to the Smith House and repaired the sea wall along the cove.

GENERAL FUND

Let us decide! This donation fund can be accessed for a multitude of projects for the benefit of KBIA summer enrichment activities.

All donations help support a place that lets children be children and lets them explore the vast and rugged beauty of the Coast of Maine in summer, while building knowledge, leadership, and respect for themselves, others and their world.

For more information on donating toward the cause this #GivingTuesday, visit the “How to Donate” page on our website.

2018 Letter from the KBIA President

News from the Beach

A Letter from the KBIA President

First of all, I want to thank David Sweetser for all the time and effort he has put into KBIA for the last 15 years, including two stints on the Board of Directors, which included being President the past two years. Without his leadership, KBIA would not be in such a great position today!

I would also like to recognize all the hard work and dedication of our Executive Director, Martin Lodish. For the last nine and a half years he has put his heart and soul into his job at KBIA, and has been instrumental to the tremendous success and growth of our wonderful institution.

On that note, I wanted to share with you that after much thought, Martin has decided that next season, the summer of 2019, will be his last at KBIA. He plans on pursuing new adventures and actually being able to take summer vacations with his family!

While everyone may be saddened by the news, we are very fortunate that Martin has given us a year plus notice. This will allow our new board ample time to search for, hire, and properly groom the best candidate to fill the Executive Director position. Please be assured that we will conduct a thorough and professional search beginning this fall and will update you throughout the process.

I would like to welcome new board members, Lisa Luken, Andrew Scipio del Campo, Tina Souza, and Isabelle Vaillancourt and thank them in advance of their willingness to serve.

Also, thanks to our new officers, Vice Presidents Donna Smythe-Wilson and Nina Chagnon, Treasurer John Wiseman, and Secretary Leigh Griswold Boudreau.

On behalf of the new Board of Directors and Officers of KBIA, we are looking forward to working with our tremendous KBIA staff and wonderful membership to ensure that KBIA continues to grow and thrive in the future!

Warm Regards,

JB
John Bauman
President

See you next summer!

What a summer! Our 108th season at KBIA was one of the best yet and we want to thank all 657 participants who were here with us throughout the summer for all the fun.

Weekly we offered more than 55 various programs, sold-out movie nights, bonfires on the beach, teen and tween nights, and open sail/kayak weekends.  We also hosted our 27th annual 5K/1K road race and the ninth annual Reid Sacco Family Regatta, family cove walks, a swim meet, a family pool day, and two celebratory awards/barbecues.  We are so fortunate to call KBIA home for the summer and we hope you do too.

Thank you for the memories!

Extend the gift of “summer”

Please help us keep the spirit of summer alive for children who are unable to attend KBIA without assistance. For every $25 donated to the KBIA scholarship fund, we are able to invite a child to attend KBIA for one day, for every $125 donated a child can attend for a week, and for every $500 donated a child can attend for four weeks!  The impact of a summer spent swimming, sailing, and just “being a kid” has a lasting impression. All donations — large, small and/or online are greatly appreciated.

Coming soon to KBIA members!

“Make new friends but keep the old, one is silver and the other gold”

When thinking of KBIA, these song lyrics ring true in all our hearts…it is a special community where you make new friends each year, while reuniting with friends made in summers past.  We come from all over the country, all over the world and join together during summers at KBIA.  To help us keep in touch year-round, we publish a Membership Directory every fall with families’ names, addresses, phone numbers and e-mails. Following tradition, it also includes a listing of our “silver” award winner names from our July and August awards ceremonies.  Members will receive the booklet in the mail as soon as it is available.

Thoughts? Comments? Questions?
We want to hear from you!

As we often do, at the end of every spectacular season at KBIA – each one seemingly better than the last – we like to reflect on our time down at the beach.  And we want to hear about your reflections as well! What did you and your family like most at KBIA? What can we improve on next year? In the spirit of open dialogue, we want to know how we may serve our members even better in the future. We invite you to gather your thoughts and send them to Executive Director Martin Lodish.

KBIA Summer Traditions

Nothing beats a mid-summer celebration! On Saturday, we started the day off with our July Watersports, Awards & BBQ.  Our most important and meaningful tradition is giving out ribbons and wedges to many smiling and encouraged children.  Wrapping up a fun-filled day, the adults of KBIA gathered by the cove for our annual Seaside Celebration.  The second half of the summer season looks to be as exciting as the first, including the Reid Sacco Family Regatta, family open swim, cove walks, weekend sailing & kayaking, movie nights, and so much more!

July Award Winners
Forever a part of KBIA history

We have many children here who excel in their areas of special interest, and we honored them at Saturday’s awards ceremony with KBIA “wedges.”  For children we saw go “above and beyond,” we awarded the traditional silver-ware that has a permanent home in our office.  Their names will be engraved, forever a part of our KBIA history.  This year’s July award-winners include:
  • Sterling Best for the Feldman Art Award
  • Gracian Burr for the Sisters Gerald & Vincent Art Award
  • Sterling Best for the Keeper of the Cove Award
  • Joey Birdsall for the Eagle Rock Yacht Club Friendship Cup
  • Colin Blais for the Griswald Cup Award for tennis staff
  • Chloe Rayer for the Cornelia C. Smith Swimming Award for staff

*All KBIA children receive participant ribbons.  If you did not pick them up after the awards, and would like to do so, please check the office.  We also have a number of “wedges,” or plaques for our award-winners not present on Saturday!

Seaside Celebration
And celebrate we did

Our eleventh annual Seaside Celebration did not disappoint.  A night overlooking the gorgeous cove, full of friends, libations, and delicous food, made for a fantastic way to celebrate the special community that we are so fortunate to be a part of. Thank you to all participants of the silent auction – winners of the pool party, bonfire BBQ, and parking spot will be contacted by office staff.  Donations to the KBIA scholarship fund are gratefully accepted and appreciated.

Volunteer Board
Get involved!

The KBIA Board of Directors is a purely volunteer run organization.  The Board is always looking for people who are interested in becoming more involved, whether by working on a committee or by sitting on the Board itself.  Please contact the office (who will forward your interest along to the appropriate committee of the Board), if you would like to nominate yourself or someone else, join a committee, or simply want to learn more about the different opportunities available.

Celebrate by the Seaside
Saturday, July 21

Join us this Saturday, from 6 to 8 PM, on the KBIA lawn for our eleventh annual Seaside Celebration. This night unites the “older” members of this KBIA community (21 and older, please), and gives us a chance to catch up and enjoy the beautiful setting by the cove. All are welcome, so invite your friends and family, partake in some cocktails and hors d’oeuvres, and have a good time!

Auction items available to bid on at the Seaside include:

1) One parking space for the 2019 season — convenient to your favorite summer enrichment program and one of the best beaches around!

2) Pool party at the KBIA pool for up to 20 swimmers for before the end of the 2019 season.

3) A private hot dog roast and s’mores on the beach for up to 10 — sit back and enjoy as KBIA staff provides the food and fun!

4) A beautiful floral display arranged by Fleurant

We also will be accepting donations for our scholarships.  These scholarships go to local children so they can attend KBIA for a fulfilling summer they otherwise would not have the chance to attend.

If you would like to bid on any auction item but cannot attend the Seaside, please contact Martin Lodish.

It’s not too late to RSVP to [email protected] or call 967-2180, please come celebrate summer with us!

Celebrate We Will

What an amazing first week of classes, we can tell already we have a great summer ahead! During our second week, we will be holding classes as usual on Wednesday and celebrating the 4th of July with lots of American pride around campus.  A spectacular show of fireworks are set off by the town between Gooch’s and Middle beaches — they look great from Mother’s Beach and the KBIA area as well!

We have a lot of fun activities coming up including our family cove walk and our 27th Annual KBIA Road Race, and much more. Due to 4th of July festivities, there will be no Wednesday Movie Night and no Campfire Beach BBQ this week.

Happy Independence Day from all of us at KBIA!

Flying the Grand Ol’ Flag
Article Image

KBIA’s yacht club flagpole

With pride, we fly our colors everyday:  the American flag, the Canadian Flag for our visiting friends, the State of Maine flag, and the KBIA burgee.

Did You Know?
KBIA has a “yacht club flagpole,” different from a traditional flagpole, so that means the American flag flies as it would on a ship.  Consistent with U.S. flag etiquette, the national ensign flies on the gaff, which represents the stern of a boat and the position of command and honor.
