A Letter from President David Sweetser

Hello from Wellesley, MA!!  I am looking out the window organizing my thoughts for this letter, in particular, and for KBIA, in general.  The snow has been light and the mercury is screaming 21 degrees.  But, my thoughts are of warm summer days.  The breeze is gentle and the sunshine is bright, and my mind is lingering on memories of my time at KBIA when my daughters attended classes, and now my granddaughter.  I have been fortunate to have spent over 13 years being associated with the Board of Directors of KBIA.  And even with that extensive time with KBIA, I have realized that I have only just begun to understand the KBIA legacy and its significant impact upon the summer lives of so many people.  The intricate bond that exists between the previous generations of parents, campers and friends of KBIA and the organization is incredible and far exceeds my original understanding.  I extend a heartfelt and sincere ‘thank you’ to all the past Board Members and employees of KBIA who have worked to cultivate this bond.

This organization has weathered the test of time and will proudly be entering our 107th season this year.   I have been most impressed with the support of past Board Officers as they offer me their assistance and knowledge.  But, to fulfill our potential, KBIA would greatly benefit from the help and support from all previous generations.  The current Board welcomes your guidance and experience.  I ask you to reach out and engage us and we will attempt to do the same.  Many of you have participated in focus group discussions, stakeholder meetings and other recent outreach efforts by the Board.  We will continue such efforts in the form of additional social activities to encourage your participation in the KBIA community – similar in mission to the Seaside Celebration.

The future of KBIA is determined by the actions of today.  The past several years have witnessed the significant upgrade of the physical facilities of KBIA.  Certainly the pool, the playground and the renovations to both Smith and Strong Cottages have restored KBIA’s physical presence.  The tireless efforts of many of you over the last few years have stabilized the facilities at KBIA.  Our maintenance and repair protocol have positioned them well for the future.  Thank you to all who contributed in many ways to these accomplishments.

I would like to see KBIA take a reasoned and measured perspective as to how we will evolve in the short and longer terms.  Our view forward is not limited by the previous years’ demands which required immediate attention.  Our long range planning committee will be afforded the time and support to develop coordinated plans.  One example of this longer term vision is that we will be addressing the opportunities that Smith Cottage offers to KBIA.  Should we raze the cottage and replace it with a more efficient building?  Should we repair the existing structure and conserve our capital?  Required environmental and permit approvals place severe limitations on the expansion of the cottage.

One very special development that KBIA has experienced in the last several years is the growth of the scholarship program.  Many of you voice your support for this initiative by the donations that you send to us.  Martin Lodish, Executive Director, has developed networks with school administrators and the community at large to invite kids the experience of summers at KBIA who otherwise would not be able to attend.  We are able to identify and provide participation in a discreet and effective manner.  This effort is an integral part of our Mission Statement and the Board takes pride in this accomplishment.  I intend to continue robust support of this program.

The underlying strength of our KBIA community is built on two foundations:  the generous time, effort, and money of KBIA supporters; and the dedication and passion of our faculty and staff.  I think you will agree that KBIA has the most able and compassionate faculty and staff of any known summer program.  Without these two vital groups of people, KBIA would not be where it is today and our future would be less bright.  I think all of us know that we are part of something very special.  I know you share my enthusiasm.

As wonderful as our past has been, I am even more optimistic about our future.  A future of accomplishment and success because of you and your support, today.  We invite you to join KBIA as a member.  Our 2017 membership form can be found on our website hereMembership fees support KBIA in the year they are given and remain crucial to the financial health and stability of our nonprofit organization. Please also consider a donation to your choice of our scholarship fund, facilities fund, and/or our general fund in addition to your membership. Please visit the “How to Donate” section of our website for more details on each fund. Thank you.

Respectfully,
David Sweetser
President of the KBIA Board of Directors

A Letter from Executive Director Martin Lodish

When I think of the spirit of KBIA, I think of the loyal and tight-knit community we have surrounding us throughout each summer season, and throughout the year. The sense of community within KBIA is ever present, has remained constant through multiple generations, and makes us all feel like we are home when we are here. It is this spirit that makes me so thankful to spend my ninth year at KBIA doing what I love. I am looking forward to our 107th season opening day when I will welcome our incredible staff, members, and – most importantly – the children. We are also fortunate to have David Sweetser, an integral part of our KBIA family and longtime member of the community, take on leadership of our Board of Directors as KBIA President – please help me in welcoming him this season.

In the 2017 season, we are pleased to announce a few new changes to our program offerings. Reading isn’t just for the littles – we will add a reading class for children age 11 and older to enjoy. Our ever popular drama class will now be divided into specific age groups for a more focused class experience. And we are excited to announce the addition of novice sailing clinics – a one day clinic specific to older children who are new to sailing so that they can feel comfortable joining one of our standard sailing classes. Think the kids are having all the fun? A new yoga class for parents will be offered this season, so grab your yoga mat and join us! More details on all classes are to come in the 2017 Registration Guide due out at the end of March.

The generosity of our donors have made it possible to make some necessary updates to our campus and facilities. Some of the bigger projects we are excited to work on include putting in a new floor for the Adventures tent and addressing the ventilation on the second floor of Smith to make it a bit cooler during the hot summer months. On the waterfront, one of our support boats has need for a new motor, and we will add water access on the docks to help clean our boats. We are thankful to our donors, volunteers, and staff for helping us keep the KBIA facilities safe and up-to-date, and hope you will visit us to see our progress this season!

In the meantime, we invite you to join KBIA as a member. Our 2017 membership form can be found on our website hereMembership fees support KBIA in the year they are given and remain crucial to the financial health and stability of our nonprofit organization while still giving scholarships.

Your generosity, in any amount, helps us make a difference both in this community and our children’s lives. Please consider a donation to our scholarship fund, facilities fund, and/or our general fund in addition to your membership. Please visit the “How to Donate” section of our website for more details on each fund. All donations help support a place that allows children to explore the vast and rugged beauty of the Coast of Maine in summer, while building knowledge, leadership, and respect for themselves, others and their world.

Sincerely,

Martin Lodish
Executive Director

We Remember John Stevenson

From the Beach
December 1, 2016
We remember

It is with a heavy heart that I write to inform you that John Stevenson, KBIA Board President from 1998 to 2000, passed away peacefully last week in Texas.  The Stevenson family has strong ties to KBIA, as three additional family members served as President — his brother-in-law George Harrington, his nephew Andy Harrington, and his youngest son David Stevenson.  John’s five children, 10 grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews also have participated in KBIA programming over the years.

In lieu of gifts or flowers, the Stevenson family requests that donations be made to KBIA under John’s name.  The best address to reach the family is at 348 N. Steele Rd, West Hartford, CT 06117.

The KBIA family offers our love, support, and deepest sympathies to the Stevenson family.

‘Tis the season for gratitude, for giving, for good cheer! Every day at KBIA we are grateful for the contributions of our members, volunteers, and donors…YOU are what keeps us going, and the children are the direct beneficiaries.  On this day – November 29th – we have been called to action…#GivingTuesday is a day we are asked to give in whatever capacity we are able, to a cause, an organization, to a greater good.  We hope you consider KBIA on this day.

#GivingTuesdayKBIA

What will your #GivingTuesdayKBIA donation support at KBIA?

We are inviting you to select what you would like your donation to support…there are three funds available:

  • Scholarships: For children who otherwise would not be able to learn to sail, make crafts, go island exploring, play tennis, learn to swim…among the many amazing summer activities at KBIA.  And not only do they have access to classes, but they are forming friendships and making memories to last a lifetime.  Each year we have traditionally offered 20 to 25 children the opportunity to experience a KBIA summer — free of charge and discreetly issued. We are able to set the number of scholarships based directly on the amount of money donated specifically to scholarships. Donating to our scholarship fund is donating an invaluable experience to a child who will forever cherish their time spent at KBIA.
  • Facilities: Updating and maintaining KBIA facilities is necessary to keep our campus and programs running smoothly.  A few off-season projects on the agenda include: new water polo nets, new sailing and pool items, a new motor for one of our support boats on the waterfront, a new floor for the tent, addressing the ventilation (to make it a bit cooler) on the second floor of Smith, water access on the docks (to help clean our boats), stone under the boats that are stored near Strong, updating the bathrooms in Smith.
  • General:  Let us decide! This donation fund can be accessed for a multitude of projects for the benefit of KBIA summer enrichment activities.
All donations help support a place that lets children be children and lets them explore the vast and rugged beauty of the Coast of Maine in summer, while building knowledge, leadership, and respect for themselves, others and their world.

For more information on donating toward the cause this #GivingTuesday, visit the “How to Donate” page on our website.

Birthday Wishes
Banner Image

Article Image

Founded on the 9th day of November in 1910, our beloved KBIA celebrates 106 years today! We want to wish all of our dedicated members, volunteers, donors, and staff a “Happy KBIA Birthday!”…if not for you we could not celebrate such a momentous occasion.

KBIA was established by founders A. Smith (President), H. Andrews (Treasurer and Clerk), and R. Wentworth (Trustee), with the purpose to educate young people about the importance of waterfront safety and the preservation of the Kennebunk Beach area. While KBIA has grown and changed considerably since its inception, the founding mission has remained steadfast and has guided the growing organization.

For 106 years, the mission of KBIA has contributed to the economic vibrancy of the Kennebunks. We have preserved and protected the facility and adjacent land while continually attracting seasonal guests, local residents and visitors to the Kennebunk Beach area with our unique youth enrichment program. Over the years,we have successfully limited and protected the Mother’s Beach area from commercial activities and development. KBIA has also made the area and facilities more inviting to the public – allowing everyone to enjoy and benefit from the spectacular surroundings.

All of us who have enjoyed even a day at KBIA owe a debt of gratitude to the founders of the association for its initiative and foresight. We also want to thank all of those who have helped KBIA become an established community contributor and beloved beach landmark.

#GivingTuesdayKBIA

There are some pretty important Tuesdays this November…#GivingTuesday being one of them.  On November 29th, we are all given the opportunity to give towards causes, charities, and organizations that mean something to us.

What better gift to give, than the experience of KBIA? No donation is too small, and all contributions go towards your choice of scholarships, facilities, and/or the general fund.

Let’s take a closer look:
  • Scholarships: For children who otherwise would not be able to learn to sail, make crafts, go island exploring, play tennis, learn to swim…among the many amazing summer activities at KBIA.  And not only do they have access to classes, but they are forming friendships and making memories to last a lifetime.  Each year we have traditionally offered 20 to 25 children the opportunity to experience a KBIA summer — free of charge and discreetly issued.  Donating to our scholarship fund is donating an invaluable experience to a child who will forever cherish their time spent at KBIA.

  • Facilities: Our unique facility is located at the base of a small peninsula known as Lord’s Point between Mother’s Beach and a sheltered cove. Keeping up with building and property repairs, updates, and improvements is a constant project aiming to make the campus safe, convenient, and enable our classes to be the most they can be.

  • General:  Let us decide! This donation fund can be accessed for a multitude of projects for the benefit of KBIA summer enrichment activities.

Please consider a year-end donation so that KBIA can continue to provide “summers of experience” here at the beach!

More than a feeling

The slow winding down of the summer season always seems to quickly transition into school obligations, after school activities, and all the bustle that autumn brings.  But here at KBIA, we are still meeting at the office, reminiscing over the past summer at KBIA, recollecting fond memories, and pouring over ways to make next season even better.  Board members have gathered together and approved the 2017 summer schedule.  The 2016 Membership Directory is currently at the printer and will be on it’s way to your mailbox soon!  Read on to hear about what else we have been up to…

How You Feel About KBIA
Survey Results

Last month, we sent out a survey requesting your feedback to help KBIA better serve our members and the children who take classes with us…we thank you.

Among some of the biggest take-aways from the survey feedback, this is what we learned:
– Over 98% of respondents would recommend KBIA to a family member or friend.
– 90% of respondents said that the location of KBIA is what makes it special, followed by staff (71%), history (64%), and quality of programs (63%).
– A significant number of respondents obtain information from the KBIA website, as an example, over 90% look at the class descriptions.
– Most classes received high marks, however, the survey did identify some classes that need attention, which will help guide us as we prepare for the 2017 season.
– Over 80% of respondents informed us that the January mailing was not important to them in paper form.
– The staff received excellent marks with over 94% of respondents agreeing with:
– the staff is well trained and professional
– the staff are great role models
– the staff does a great job of teaching and reinforcing positive values
– the staff is friendly and accessible

We are extremely thankful to the participants who gave their thoughtful input, and we have read through and reflected upon every response, rating, and comment.

We promised a prize to a randomly selected participant…and the winner is…
Kelley Currie!  Thank you Kelley, and we hope you enjoy your prize for providing your survey feedback!

We appreciate you!

January Member Letters

New this January, we will be sending out our annual Member Letters electronically instead of through the post office.  That’s right, we’re keeping up with the times – and with your preference, and transitioning our biggest mailing over to e-mail.  This will also include the 2017 Member Form, so please keep your eye out this January!

Which reminds us! Please, pretty please, send us your updated e-mail addresses so that we can ensure we are reaching you! We want to keep you updated on all the goings on at KBIA year-round, and the Member Letters are especially vital to informing you on our personal and financial reflections of the year.  You can e-mail us at [email protected] with your updated e-mail address.  Thank you!

“My summer friends were among my best friends and still are to this day. It’s no surprise that a lot of people my age who grew up spending summers at the beach are back with their families. We all know how beautiful and special this place is, and we want our kids to feel the same way we do.”

KBIA by the numbers

Closing out our 106th season at KBIA has us reflecting on another banner year down at the beach.  With open arms we welcomed back many familiar faces and were graced with the fortune of welcoming many new friends this summer.  KBIA served 680 people this season, the previous high being 691 in 2014!

Weekly we offered more than 55 various programs, and we also hosted a MIRC sailing competition, our 25th annual 5K/1K road race, the seventh annual Reid Sacco Family Regatta, the New England Youth Laser championship, and a KBIA Olympic trials, plus weekly sold-out movie nights, bonfires on the beach, teen and tween nights, and two celebratory awards/barbecues.

Extend the gift of “summer”

Article Image

Please help us keep the spirit of summer alive for children who are unable to attend KBIA without assistance.  For every $500 donated to the KBIA scholarship fund, we are able to invite a child to attend KBIA for a four week scholarship!  The impact of a summer spent swimming, sailing, and just “being a kid” has a lasting impression. All donations — large, small and/or online are greatly appreciated.

Steering the ship
David Sweetser named President

At August’s meeting, our Board of Directors appointed a new president, David Sweetser, a longtime KBIA supporter and board member.  David replaces Shannon Beer Belanger, mother of two and herself once a KBIA kid and office employee.  We thank Shannon for an incredible two years under her leadership.

KBIA wouldn’t and couldn’t run without the year-round efforts of its volunteer Board of Directors. The board works diligently behind the scenes and meets quarterly as a group to help steer the organization. This month we bid a fond farewell to departing members Courtney Finnegan Sepic and Susan Rundquist Palmer. Thank you all!

Congratulations to our August award-winners

Always a bittersweet ending to a season, we concluded our 2016 season with KBIA’s biannual BBQ & Awards ceremony on Aug. 20. All children received participation ribbons, some received KBIA “wedges” or plaques for those who exemplify the KBIA spirit in attitude and accomplishment, while a select few earned their way into KBIA history. For these top honors, winners’ names are engraved on our traditional “silver ware,” which are on display in the office for all to see. And the winners are:

Hartley Lord Cup for Seamanship:  Olliver Turnbull
Eagle Rock Yacht Club Officer’s Cup:  Elly Polivy
Eagle Rock Yacht Club Hartley Lord Cup:  Aidan Wood
Eagle Rock Yacht Club Friendship Cup:  Max Turnbull

Coming soon to KBIA members!

Can we be pen pals?!  It’s that time of year again…to help us keep in touch year-round, we publish a Membership Directory every fall with families’ names, addresses, phone numbers and e-mails. Following tradition, it also includes a listing of winners’ names from our July and August awards ceremonies. If you haven’t already, please send us your preference as to whether or not you would like to be included in the directory, and how you would like your information printed.  Members will receive the booklet in the mail as soon as it is available.

One more summer adventure…one more swim, sail, kayak trip, drama performance, art project, tennis match…one more summer friend to make in class, during free swim, or at a movie night.  Week 8 brings our final week at KBIA and we are ready to soak up every last minute before we close for the season.  We are ending with a bang, holding our final watersports, awards ceremony and BBQ this Saturday.  We hope you’ll join us in enjoying these last days of summer at the beach!
