Looking ahead to Summer 2015

FROM THE DESK OF PRESIDENT SHANNON BEER BELANGER

Shannon BelangerJanuary 30, 2015

KBIA has been a part of my life since the age of 7 when my parents rented a summer cottage in Kennebunk Beach and I began taking KBIA classes. My family fell in love with the community and we returned every summer. I worked in the office more summers than I can remember, and I met my future husband, David Belanger, playing tennis at KBIA. Our two boys started swimming lessons at 3 years old. They are now 14 and 11, and I have watched the wonder and joy in their eyes as they travel through their own KBIA journeys. It is a great pleasure to assume the role of President and continue my connection to KBIA.

The past five years have been a period of renewal for KBIA. The 100th Capital Campaign was launched with the 100th Celebration and closed at the end of December. The philanthropic support given by the KBIA community is unparalleled in our history. The campaign raised an impressive $1.1 million from 339 donors, allowing KBIA to make necessary safety and facilities improvements, upgrade the waterfront fleet, as well as build a new pool and playground. Increasing the endowment, which supports scholarships, has meant our scholarship offerings have tripled since 2008. The generosity also came in volunteer hours, and in true KBIA spirit, the community and membership joined together to build the playground over five days of digging, hauling, and dedication.

This widespread enthusiasm for KBIA and its priorities has helped ensure that this organization will continue to be a place for children to discover summer on the coast of Maine for generations to come. As we look forward, the Board of Directors will continue to maintain and improve the quality of the offerings, meet the growing interests of the children, and look for new ways to enrich children’s summer experience.

I look forward to seeing everyone at KBIA this summer!

Sincerely,

Shannon Beer Belanger
President, Board of Directors / [email protected]

FROM THE DESK OF EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR MARTIN LODISH

Martin LodishJanuary 30, 2015

I am blessed that even in the darkest, greyest days of winter, my job requires planning for the warmer, sunny days of summer ahead.  This particular offseason is notable, as the five-year Capital Campaign has me reflecting on the recent changes I have witnessed at KBIA. Despite the new and improved KBIA — a new pool, playground, tent, equipment as well as multiple structural improvements — the spirit of KBIA remains much the same it has been through multiple generations. I am proud to play a role in “keeping the spirit of summer alive” at Kennebunk Beach.

These necessary improvements over the last five years have only strengthened our mission and resolve in 2015. Every year we strive for better, and in the coming season we plan to build upon our successful sailing and tennis programs. We will be offering an advanced sailing class that will travel to compete in offsite regattas, which will better serve the needs of our most experienced sailors. We are also in the midst of reworking our tennis curriculum, blending instruction and games at various appropriate age and skill levels. Also new for 2015 will be our nine-week season, one week longer than our typical summer due to the calendar cycle. Keep an eye for details and our annual class schedules in our 2015 Registration Guide, due out March 30.

In the meantime, we encourage you to join KBIA. Membership fees support KBIA in the year they are given and remain crucial to the financial health and stability of our nonprofit organization while still giving local scholarships.

Your generosity, in any amount, helps us make a difference both in this community and our children’s lives.  Please consider a donation to our scholarship program in addition to your membership – allowing us to continue sharing the KBIA experience with worthy children from the local community.

Sincerely,

Martin Lodish

Summer 2014: Thanks for the memories

“We feel that unmistakable wistfulness as another ending draws near.
Packing up, wearing a sweater, and saying goodbye to friends is actually the beginning
of the countdown to next summer when another adventure begins.”

~ “Remembering 100 Year at the Beach”

KBIA by the numbers

We have reason to be proud of another great season here at KBIA. Not only did we see and hear children “being children” all summer, our numbers tell us the same story. We had more participants than ever! We served 691 people this summer; the previous high was 665 in 2013. During Week 4 alone, we served a record 343 folks!

Weekly we offered more than 55 various programs, and we also played host for two swim meets, a MIRC sailing competition, our 23rd annual 5K/1K road race and the fifth annual Reid Sacco Family Regatta, plus weekly sold-out movie nights, bonfires on the beach, teen and tween nights, and two celebratory awards/barbecues.

KBIA’s signature program – the Waterfront – saw growth in Sea Fleas, plus every level of sailing and kayaking we offer. And our Sailing Team had a fantastic season! At the five MIRCs in which they competed, KBIA had 3 first-place finishes and 1 second-place finish in the 420 division. In the two competitions, KBIA placed second both times in the Opti division. And two members of the race team represented KBIA at the Junior Olympics in Portland this July!

Extend the gift of “summer”

KBIA also almost doubled from last year the number of scholarships we were able to award, and, with your help, we’d like to carry on that tradition. And now through the end of September, friends of KBIA will match every $2 we raise with an additional $1 donation! By donating to our fund, you will give a child the opportunity “to be a kid,” experiencing a summer of swimming, sailing, crafting and so much more at KBIA. All donations — large, small and/or online — will help push us across our finish line.

Steering the ship
KBIA alumna Shannon Beer Belanger named President

At August’s meeting, our Board of Directors appointed a new president, Shannon Beer Belanger, mother of two and herself once a KBIA kid and office employee. Her father, Mike Beer, served as President from 1986 to 1990! Shannon replaces Seana Wood, who tirelessly led the board for two years. Thank you both for meeting the challenge!

KBIA wouldn’t and couldn’t run without the year-round efforts of its volunteer Board of Directors. In addition to working behind the scenes on everything from policy to the playground, members also meet quarterly as a group to help steer the organization. Thank you all!

Coming soon to KBIA members!

Home is where the heart is, so many of us consider KBIA a home away from home. Some come to us from around the corner, while others come from around the globe, and we are united by our love for this great spot on Kennebunk Beach. To help us keep in touch year-round, we publish a Membership Directory every fall with families’ names, addresses, phone numbers and e-mails. Following tradition, it also includes a listing of winners’ names from our July and August awards ceremonies. The directory is in production right now, and members will receive the booklet in the mail by early October.

“KBIA is an association of people who yearly answer the siren song of Kennebunk Beach, a place where the sky stretches overhead like a pale blue blanket, and the ocean crawls in over the sand and retreats leaving just a hint of its memory … scarlet-hued sunsets, double rainbows, periwinkles and insatiable seagulls.”
~ “Remembering 100 Years at the Beach.”

As we close out our 100th Anniversary Capital Campaign, we want to remind members of our special book, “Remembering 100 Years at the Beach.” We still have several copies left to sell! This 90-page hard-cover edition, written by Susan Doherty Hannaford and edited by Faye Denniston in 2010, features historical photos, our history, and personal stories through a century at the beach. Copies are available for $45, plus postage if mailing.

Week 7: Swimming right along
Article Image
Two more weeks and still so much to do! We have a swim meet this Friday and the fifth annual Reid Sacco Family Regatta on Sunday, plus our always-popular Movie Night (sold out again) and Tween NIght at Maine Rock Gym and Teen NIght at Fun-O-Rama. All that in addition to another week’s worth of summer sun and fun in our regular offerings. With so much going on, we hope you’ll join us in making the most of the rest of this summer.

Article ImageKBIA to host swim meet this Friday

Come cheer on our young swimmers as they compete Friday night as KBIA, the second of our two annual club meets. All KBIA kids who have taken at least one week of Swim Team are invited to compete in a variety of races; please see Heidi in the pool to register. Swimmers should meet at KBIA for warm-ups at 5:30, and competition starts at 6. Burgers and hot dogs from the grill will be sold.

Set sail with us this Sunday

Sailors and spectators alike are invited to KBIA’s fifth annual Reid Sacco Family Regatta on Sunday. The day starts with a skipper meeting at 10:30 AM, followed by sailing at 11. Interested participants should register in the office to reserve a KBIA boat or bring their own boat to launch between 285 and 292 Beach Avenue. Due to the shallow nature of the cove, even at high tide, sailors should use an Opti, Laser, Taz or Chickadee watercraft.

A $10 suggested donation per sailor will benefit the Reid Sacco Foundation. The regatta honors a longtime KBIA student and instructor who died of sarcoma at age 20 in 2005. For information on the Reid Sacco Foundation, visit www.reidsaccofoundation.org.

Getting in and out safely at KBIA

Please help us keep KBIA safe for everyone! Our pick-up/drop-off zone is designed for a quick in-and-out, and it is imperative that drivers stay with their vehicles at all times. In case of emergency, this is the only way in for response vehicles. Kennebunk police have and will continue to ticket both areas. We appreciate your cooperation in helping us move traffic along in that busy section!

Clynk for KBIA

CLYNK is another way to help preserve our beach and help KBIA at the same time! We now have those green bags available at our office for members to pick up, fill with returnables, and redeem them at the Kennebunk Hannaford (or any CLYNK redemption center). Proceeds from KBIA-tagged bags will benefit our nonprofit organization.

Explore Strawberry Island … start here

While our children more commonly visit the island by walking directly over the sand at low tide, the rocky island is also accessible to the public via our “Gateway to Strawberry Island.” KBIA’s .34-acre rocky plot on Great Hill Road provides access to Strawberry Island. Just look for our sign at 38 Great Hill Road, next to the small plot owned by the Kennebunk Land Trust.

This week at KBIA

TWEEN NIGHT: Maine Rock Gym, Portland, 5 to 9ish PM Tuesday. $24.
**Waiver MUST be completed by guardian prior to 4 PM Tuesday in front office**

MOVIE NIGHT: “Monsters Inc.” at Smith House, 7 to 9 PM Wednesday. $7.

Three cheers for KBIA!

Week 6 promises to be another busy one at KBIA. On Tuesday, our teens and tweens are invited to hit the beach for our annual G-Force Laser Tag night. On Wednesday, KBIA will host a MIRC sailing competition, and on Sunday we will lead our final Cove Walk of the season. If you’re not already involved in the events, we invite you to come show your KBIA pride and cheer on the competition. Extra, extra … get your details below!

Show & Tell in the Cove
See what you will find at our next Cove Walk

Article Image“At high tide, the cove fills with 6 to 8 feet of water for swimming, sailing, paddleboarding and kayaking.

Come low tide, however, and the cove between Lord’s Point and Great Hill Road in Kennebunk is a living touch tank of marine life and artifacts. Take a walk on the rocks and sand, and in the tidal pools, and you’ll see clams, oysters, rock crabs, hermit crabs, starfish, baby lobsters, plus an abundance of sea glass and china, along with seaweeds, sponges and living grasses. Periwinkle shells are everywhere, as are rocks large and small.”  ~ York County Coast Star, July 25 … read more!

KBIA marine biology and kayak instructor Ben Braasch will lead the final community Cove Walk from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 2. Cost is $10 for families. Call 967-2180 to register. Visitors should wear old shoes and bring a bucket for catch-and-release collecting.

Life guard certification

KBIA is offering a life guarding certification class this weekend, and all KBIA members and employees are welcome to jump in this Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 2-3. The cost of the course is $300, and KBIA will pay half of the class for all employees. If you are interested in participating, please call the office at (207) 967-2180.

KBIA contributes to science world

Article ImageEver wonder about those orange-colored masses often found on rocks in the tidepools?

KBIA’s Junior Scientist class did, so children spent their week observing and recording their findings on the Orange Sheath Tunicate.

“We found 35 different colonies of Orange Sheath Tunicate in approximately 1,000 square feet. We found most of the tunicate on rocks rather than on the floor of the tidepool we were looking in. The color of the tunicate varied from bright orange to deep red.

Led by Michelle Webber, our Junior Scientists then shared their information with Vital Signs , a science-sharing project of the Gulf of Maine Research Institute Program. This report is just one of six marine species contributed by our popular class! Check it out!

Coming up: Reid Sacco Family Regatta

Sailors and spectators alike are invited to the Kennebunk Beach Improvement Association’s fifth annual Reid Sacco Family Regatta on Sunday, Aug. 10. The day will starts with a skipper meeting at 10:30 AM, followed by sailing at 11. Interested participants should register in the office to reserve a KBIA boat or bring their own boat to launch between 285 and 292 Beach Avenue. Due to the shallow nature of the cove, even at high tide, sailors should use an Opti, Laser, Taz or Chickadee watercraft. A $10 donation per sailor will benefit the Reid Sacco Foundation. The regatta honors a longtime KBIA student and instructor who died of sarcoma at age 20 in 2005. For information on the Reid Sacco Foundation, visit www.reidsaccofoundation.org.

Calling on your generosity
Donors will help fund scholarships for KBIA kids
And now through the end of August, friends of KBIA will match every $2 we raise with an additional $1 donation!
This is perhaps our most important mission yet because donors directly affect local children and their families who need a boost like KBIA in their lives. Scholarships are based on need and/or life-changing circumstances. By donating to our fund, you will give a child the opportunity “to be a kid,” experiencing a summer of swimming, sailing, crafting and so much more at KBIA.

Over the last five years we have built a new pool, replaced the playground, installed a new tent and made numerous structural upgrades to our facilities. Last on our list for our 100th Anniversary Capital Campaign is funding our endowment that helps support scholarships.

All donations — large, small and/or online — will help push us across our finish line.

Won’t you please “answer” our call?

KBIA: Summer traditions continue

Kids earn their summers. So when they spend their precious free time with us at KBIA, we make sure they get the most fun in the sun, while learning a whole lot in the process! KBIA offers more than 50 courses, so surely there is something else they’d like to try. Water polo? Tennis? Leathercrafts? Painting? We invite you to revisit our 2014 Registration Guide to see everything we have to offer, or simply look around at all we have going on any given day here. Whatever you choose, whatever they choose, we hope to see you back at the beach soon!

Honoring our children
July award-winners named

We have many children here who excel in their areas of special interest, and we honored them at Saturday’s awards ceremony with KBIA “wedges.” For children we saw go “above and beyond,” we awarded the traditional silver-ware that has a permanent home in our office. Their names will be engraved on the plaques, forever part of our KBIA history. This year’s July award-winners include:

Joey Tomassetti for the Sisters G&V Art Award for the arts.
Cece Wailer for the Feldman Award for the arts.
Amir Yaghoobi for the Keeper of the Cove Award.
Will Morris for the Comelia C. Smith Swimming Award for staff.
Alec Felvinci for Griswald Cup for tennis teaching.

Week 4: Good day, sunshine!

We’re on a roll now … the weather has been ideal and so have our first three weeks at KBIA. If you have been to KBIA recently, you know what we mean. It’s your beaming child who takes a confident bow onstage at drama. It’s your grandson who, once scared of the water, has proudly learned to paddleboard. It’s your teen gaining confidence “in the real world,” thanks to our hands-on Counselor-in-Training program. It’s your child who is now smitten by seals after taking one of our field trips! Thanks to some great offerings led by the best instructors around, our children are making connections and already coming full circle. If you haven’t been to KBIA this summer to see for yourself, what are you waiting for?

Help us make a splash this Friday
Swim-a-Thon donations will benefit scholarships

Swim … and help KBIA in its quest to continue giving scholarships for years to come! Kids can help make this happen on Friday as part of KBIA’s Swim-a-Thon . Our children and CITs raise money by asking for pledges or flat donations for swimming lengths* of the pool. They can do this during their regular swim classes on Friday, July 18, or during a special swim time at2:30 PM Friday. Collect your money based on the lengths you swim and bring it to the office at the watersports/awards on Saturday. Money raised will be used to fund the scholarship program at KBIA.

Help Reid’s Ride mark 10 years

YOU are invited to join the Sacco family in celebrating the 10th annual Reid’s Ride next week. All are welcome to ride the final third leg of the route, approximately 42 miles (Rye Beach, NH to the Burkhard Family Estate).
