See you next summer!
Banner Image

The end of the season is always bittersweet, this year especially for me, as it is my last at KBIA. But, our 109th season at KBIA was one of the best yet and we want to thank all 640 participants who were here with us throughout the summer for all the fun.

Weekly we offered more than 55 various programs, sold-out movie nights, bonfires on the beach, teen and tween nights, and open sail/kayak weekends.  We also hosted our 28th annual 5K/1K road race and the 10th annual Reid Sacco Family Regatta, family cove walks, a swim meet, family pool days, and two celebratory awards/barbecues.  We are so fortunate to call KBIA home for the summer and we hope you do too.

Thank you for the memories!

Extend the gift of “summer”

Please help us keep the spirit of summer alive for children who are unable to attend KBIA without assistance. The impact of a summer spent swimming, sailing, and just “being a kid” has a lasting impression. All donations — large, small and/or online are greatly appreciated.

Coming soon to KBIA members!

KBIA is a community like no other. We all make new friends each year, while reuniting with friends made in summers past. We come from all over the country, all over the world and join together during summers at KBIA. To help us keep in touch year-round, we publish a Membership Directory every fall with families’ names, addresses, phone numbers and e-mails. Following tradition, it also includes a listing of our “silver” award winner names from our July and August awards ceremonies.  Members will receive the booklet in the mail as soon as it is available.

Be sure to update us with any new contact information by contacting the office: [email protected]

Thoughts? Comments? Questions?
We want to hear from you!

As we often do, at the end of every spectacular season at KBIA – each one seemingly better than the last – we like to reflect on our time down at the beach.  And we want to hear about your reflections as well! What did you and your family like most at KBIA? What can we improve on next year? In the spirit of open dialogue, we want to know how we may serve our members even better in the future. We invite you to gather your thoughts and send them to Executive Director Martin Lodish.

KBIA is truely a unique experience, offering children the opportunity to pick and choose classes, tailoring to their specific interests.  We are proud to run such an extensive variety of programs year after year – from surfing, sailing, kayaking, to reading, drama, pottery, to swim team, golfing, tennis, woodworking…and so much more…there is something for everyone.  We owe these fantastic summers at KBIA to the generosity of members and donors.

Please help us keep the spirit of summer alive for children who are unable to attend KBIA without assistance. The impact of a summer spent swimming, sailing, and just “being a kid” has a lasting impression. All donations — large, small and/or online are greatly appreciated.

Announcing New KBIA Executive Director

Welcoming KBIA’s New Executive Director

Article Image

Mimi Fox, New Executive Director
Kennebunk Beach Association Improvement Hiring Committee is thrilled to announce Mimi (Meserve) Fox has been named Executive Director heading into the Association’s 110th season. KBIA President John Bauman remarks, “I am delighted that Mimi will be returning to KBIA as Executive Director. Her family roots, longtime community ties, and previous work experience at KBIA, make her the ideal choice to lead our wonderful organization into its next chapter.”

Mimi, a Corporate & Foundation Relation Manager at Settlement Music School in Philadelphia, will take over the ED position this fall. She is also a former teacher, having taught at Kennebunk High School as well as other areas in Maine. She succeeds Martin Lodish, who held the post for 11 seasons.

“I can think of no one better to take over leadership of KBIA. Mimi’s experience, both at KBIA and over her career, make her a phenomenal choice as the next Executive Director,” says Martin Lodish. “She loves KBIA as much as I do, and no doubt will continue to build upon the successes of the past decade at KBIA while preserving the special culture of KBIA. I am looking forward to working with Mimi over the next few months, and beyond if needed, to make sure the transition is smooth.”

Having grown up in Kennebunk, Mimi has strong ties to the area, as well as to KBIA. Mimi held the Program Administrator position for several years at KBIA, and played a key role in the advancement of many of the systems the office uses today. “Accepting this position at KBIA is like coming home,” expresses Mimi. “Having grown up in the Kennebunks, I’m thrilled to lead this incredible organization into its next chapter and share the magic of the area with my family for years to come.”

John Bauman stated that he was very pleased with the search process, noting that it was transparent, professional and very thorough. He also expressed how grateful he was to Donna Smythe-Wilson and Nina Chagnon for leading the search and the Executive Committee and Board of Directors for their help and support.
Welcome back Mimi!

KBIA Summer Traditions
Banner Image

What a weekend of celebrations! On Saturday, we started the day off with our July Watersports, Awards & BBQ, where handing out ribbons and wedges to many smiling and encouraged children is our most meaningful tradition.

Our annual Seaside Celebration on Saturday night turned out to be a beautiful night despite the heat earlier in the day. We had a great turnout and sprinkled in a few surprises.

July Award Winners
Forever a part of KBIA history

We have many children here who excel in their areas of special interest, and we honored them at Saturday’s awards ceremony with KBIA “wedges.”  For children we saw go “above and beyond,” we awarded the traditional silver-ware that has a permanent home in our office.  Their names will be engraved, forever a part of our KBIA history.  This year’s July award-winners include:
  •  Zander Karakhanian for the Feldman Art Award
  •  Emillee Davis for the Sisters Gerald & Vincent Art Award
  •  Zander Karakhanian for the Keeper of the Cove Award
  •  TJ Walsh for the Eagle Rock Yacht Club Friendship Cup
  •  Ryan Turnbull for the Griswald Cup Award for tennis staff
  •  Zoe Lament for the Cornelia C. Smith Swimming Award for staff

*All KBIA children receive participant ribbons.  If you did not pick them up after the awards, and would like to do so, please check the office.  We also have a number of “wedges,” or plaques for our award-winners not present on Saturday!

Seaside Celebration
Thank You

Always a fun celebration by the cove, this night was extra special for me. I’m honored for the recognition by the Board of Directors, and all who attended. My time at KBIA has always been making sure we run a smooth and successful program for the children, and most of all — that we have fun!

Thank you to all participants of the silent auction – winners of the pool party, bonfire BBQ, and parking spot will be contacted by office staff. A big thank you to the folks that donated to scholarships.  If you missed the Seaside and still want to donate, you can still do so by contacting the office at [email protected]. Donations to the KBIA scholarship fund are gratefully accepted and appreciated.

Volunteer Board
Get involved!

The KBIA Board of Directors is a purely volunteer run organization.  The Board is always looking for people who are interested in becoming more involved, whether by working on a committee or by sitting on the Board itself.  Please contact the office (who will forward your interest along to the appropriate committee of the Board), if you would like to nominate yourself or someone else, join a committee, or simply want to learn more about the different opportunities available.

Interested participants should register in the office to reserve a KBIA boat or bring their own boat to launch between 285 and 292 Beach Avenue.  Due to the shallow nature of the cove, even at high tide, sailors should use an Opti, Laser, or Chickadee watercraft.

No Swimming in the KBIA Cove
Safety First!
Article ImageThat cool, beautiful water in the cove is so enticing! Unfortunately, we cannot allow swimming in the cove in front of KBIA. With no lifeguards on duty, and with many sailing/boating activities (including powerboating) happening, we want to be able to keep everyone safe. Luckily, we have the ocean on the other side of the KBIA playground for the enjoyment of all.

Nicole’s 5K Run / Ellie’s Walk
Saturday, July 27
Love the KBIA ‘A Day at the Beach’ Road Race and want to run again for another great cause? Nicole’s 5K Run & Ellie’s Walk will be held on Saturday, July 27th at Lord’s Point, Kennebunk Beach. The USATF certified race runs along Kennebunk’s gorgeous beaches, the same course as the KBIA road race. Nicole’s Run benefits Caring Unlimited, York County’s Domestic Violence Resource Center.

Celebrate by the Seaside
Saturday, July 20

Join us this Saturday, from 6 to 8:30 PM, on the KBIA lawn for our 12th annual Seaside Celebration. This night unites the “older” members of this KBIA community (21 and older, please), and gives us a chance to catch up and enjoy the beautiful setting by the cove. All are welcome, so invite your friends and family, partake in some cocktails and hors d’oeuvres catered by Kitchen Chicks, and have a good time!

Auction items available to bid on at the Seaside include:

1) One parking space for the 2020 season — convenient to your favorite summer enrichment program and one of the best beaches around!

2) Pool party at the KBIA pool for up to 20 swimmers for before the end of the 2020 season.

3) A private hot dog roast and s’mores on the beach for up to 10 — sit back and enjoy as KBIA staff provides the food and fun!

We also will be accepting donations for our scholarships.  These scholarships go to local children so they can attend KBIA for a fulfilling summer they otherwise would not have the chance to attend.

If you would like to bid on any auction item but cannot attend the Seaside, please contact Martin Lodish.

We had a fantastic day for our 28th Annual 1K Fun Run and 5K Road Race.

This year we had a total of 269 registered runners, with 66 in the 1K Fun Run! You can find your race time result on the Granite State Race Services website here.

Congratulations to Nate Mulder, the overall boys 1K winner finishing at 3:06, and Ella Wilner, the overall girls 1K winner finishing at 3:09!  In the 5K race, Thomas Fries was the first to cross the finish line and placed first in the men’s division, while Kate Hastings placed first in the women’s division.
Check out pictures from the day on KBIA’s facebook page.

If anyone missed receiving their award or pre-registered race t-shirt, you can pick up at the office.

A huge thank you goes out to Hannaford, Congdon’s Doughnuts, and Christian’s Cafe & Eatery for their generous donations to the race.

And of course we can’t forget to express our gratitude to all the volunteers, runners, and spectators for making this such a special and fun day!

Like our course? Nicole’s Run, hosted on KBIA grounds and following our same 1K and 5K route, will be held Saturday, July 27 at 9AM. All funds raised will benefit Caring Unlimited domestic violence prevention programs, in memory of Kennebunk mother Nicole Oliver.

Flying the Grand Ol’ Flag
Article Image
KBIA’s yacht club flagpole

With pride, we fly our colors everyday:  the American flag, the Canadian Flag for our visiting friends, the State of Maine flag, and the KBIA burgee.

Did You Know?
KBIA has a “yacht club flagpole,” different from a traditional flagpole, so that means the American flag flies as it would on a ship. Consistent with U.S. flag etiquette, the national ensign flies on the gaff, which represents the stern of a boat and the position of command and honor.

Parking, Pick-ups, and Drop-offs

Please help us keep KBIA safe for everyone and stay with your vehicles in the designated pick-up and drop-off zone in front of the pool.  It is crucial to stay within the white paint — there is no spot before and after the crosswalk to the playground to enhance visibility of kids crossing the street.

The drop-off/pick-up zone is also for emergency vehicles, so drivers must remain with their cars at all times.  Kennebunk police have and will continue to ticket both areas.  We appreciate your cooperation in helping us stay safe, and move traffic along in that busy section!

Daily Open Swim

Can’t get enough of the water now that it’s finally summer?  Us either! KBIA offers a supervised free swim session on a daily basis, Monday through Friday, June 24 to August 16.  Half-hour free-swim sessions are available for all children ages 4 and older, enrolled in other KBIA classes that week.

Join us for a splashing good time every day:

Bathrooms & Changing Rooms

We are happy to announce that two newly renovated bathrooms are available to the public behind Smith House. If all you need is a place to change into your bathing suit, please use one of the four family-sized changing rooms located in the back of the white Adventures Tent.
