Annual membership fees help support KBIA’s programs. We’re proud to be a place that lets children be children and lets them explore the vast and rugged beauty of the Coast of Maine in summer, while building knowledge, leadership, and respect for themselves, others and their world. We’re particularly proud of the scholarships we offer to children in the Kennebunk area who might otherwise not be able to take advantage of our KBIA enrichment programs, and of our many other community endeavors.

Membership fees remain a crucial element for us to achieve operational breakeven, to allow us to provide local scholarships, and to keep the cost of classes down.

Calling all CITs & Counselors!

News from the Beach
February 18, 2019
Join Us for a KBIA Summer!

Join us in making summer the best time of year for the kids at KBIA!

We are now accepting applications for our Junior/Senior Counselor positions for 2019. Anyone interested in the CIT program can fill out the CIT Interest Form and register for the class through the office – all are welcome! Office registrations for CIT classes will begin April 1, 2019. Our season will run eight weeks from June 24 to August 16. Paperwork is now available on our website

Counselors and CITs play an important role at KBIA, both in supporting our mission and in helping provide exceptional experiences for our children. Teens enjoy all the benefits of KBIA’s unique environment as they learn valuable skills, earn important certifications and build lasting relationships.

COUNSELORS
Hired by Executive Director Martin Lodish, Junior and Senior Counselors are paid employees of KBIA, so they must be at least 15 years or older (or be turning 15 on a summer birthday and have completed ninth grade). Counselors help support our programs, keep our children safe and carry out the mission of KBIA. We make every effort to match positions with counselors’ interests, where possible, and give hiring preference to former CITs. Deadline for first consideration is March 15.

COUNSELOR-IN-TRAINING (CIT) PROGRAM
Managed by our Counselor In Training Coordinator, our CIT program gives 13- and 14-year-olds the opportunity to work together, develop leadership skills and grow into role models for our younger campers (children who turn 13 over the summer and have completed the 7th grade are eligible to be CITs). CITs must enroll in at least two weeks of consecutive classes to be considered. Interested teens should submit their paperwork as soon as possible.

For more details, read about the experience by clicking here.

We look forward to hearing from applicants!

2019 Letter from the President John Bauman

News from the Beach
February 6, 2019
A Letter from President John Bauman

Article Image

While rounding Mother’s Beach last week with the temperature gauge in my car reading five degrees, I started reflecting on how amazing it was that KBIA was in its 109th year! I glanced at the empty playground, Smith House and Strong Cottage and then at the covered pool. My mind immediately took me back 50 years when my parents first enrolled me in classes. The only image I have, is a of a big man yelling “One, Two, Three…One, Two, Three…One, Two, Three KICK!” For those of you old enough to remember, that was swimming instructor Paul Atwood. And who could forget Mrs. Reid telling us sailors, “You’re in IRONS” with her megaphone out in the cove. While it was ages ago, the memories are as vivid as the smell of the sea air when the tide turns and the sounds of seagulls and children playing on the beach that we all look forward to experiencing when summer hits each year.

It was with those thoughts that made me realize how humbled and honored I am to be President of our wonderful organization KBIA. I am truly excited to have the chance to work with the Board of Directors, KBIA staff, and the entire community to see KBIA continue to grow and prosper!

2018 was another good year for KBIA as membership and programming remained strong, although we did end up running a deficit. However, the Board of Directors, Martin and I are finalizing this year’s budget and we are planning to erase the deficit to break even in 2019.

We are excited to be renovating the bathrooms in Smith House this spring, one of which will be handicap accessible, and we will be replacing the floor in Smith this Fall. We have created a Programming Committee to explore new program possibilities for 2020 and beyond. We are also looking to add social events that include our friends at Edgcomb and Webhannet, as well as the Kennebunk Community.

As I mentioned in my Fall letter, this October Martin Lodish will be leaving KBIA after 10 and a half great years as Executive Director.  We are going to miss him, but we are working diligently to find a new ED that will continue to help us maintain the excellence that we have experienced in the past and also help us grow to new heights in the future. We will make sure to keep you apprised of the hiring process as we move forward.

Finally, I want to make sure to thank the entire membership and others in the community who stay involved with KBIA and have been so loyal and generous year after year.  Without all of your help KBIA would not be able to thrive and grow.

THANKS FOR YOUR CONTINUED SUPPORT!

Warm Regards,

John Bauman
President of the KBIA Board of Directors

2019 Letter from Executive Director Martin Lodish

News from the Beach
January 19, 2019
A Letter from Executive Director Martin Lodish

Article Image

I first stepped foot on the KBIA campus in March of 2009 when I toured a snowy facility with then President of the Board, Andy Harrington. This was my first lengthy conversation with a KBIA member since accepting the position a few weeks prior, and as we walked along it became clear to me that it was – and is – not just the campus but the people that make KBIA special. KBIA has been a central part of my professional and personal life since then – and it is bittersweet as I prepare for my eleventh and last summer at KBIA. Members have asked what they can do to thank me for my service at KBIA – and all that I ask is for you to join me as a member this summer, as nothing would make me happier than to have as many members, new and returning, be part of KBIA this summer. Additionally, if you are able, to contribute to our scholarship fund and/or facilities fund – two areas that have experienced a lot of growth under my tenure and areas that I hope will remain strong for the foreseeable future.

I view my role as a caretaker of a community establishment, with the responsibility of handing over KBIA to the next Director better than it was when I received it. KBIA has come a long way in the last ten years that I have been Director, and it is well positioned for the next leader. What I am most proud of though, is rising to the challenge of keeping KBIA’s culture of inclusiveness, friendliness, and the balance between informality, safety, and structure strong. I have hired many counselors that grew up coming to KBIA, and I hope they will someday become the next generation of parents, members, and leaders of this venerable institution.

But first, I’m looking forward to the 2019 season with a few new changes in the mix. We have added a laser sailing class which is designed for both sailors who have mastered the fundamentals of sailing and are ready for more independence, while including older novice sailors who are eager to jump into the sport. We also have continued to rework the offerings for art electives, and are exploring other areas that can keep older children engaged. The Board will be meeting later this month and will be asked to approve long overdue upgrades to the two main bathrooms in Smith.

Personal connections between members are central to what makes KBIA strong and we are excited to continue to offer opportunities for members to socialize and meet one another. We will offer extended family bonfire and barbeque nights when the tides allow, two family days in KBIA’s pool, and sweets and coffee on Fridays. More details on all classes and events will be in the 2019 Registration Guide due out at the end of March.

We have added extra sections of some of the more popular classes that tend to fill up, especially in the middle of the summer when we are busier. This is in hopes to reduce the likelihood of children not getting a space in the classes of their choice – however, as we process registrations in the order they are received, it is still best to send in your registrations as early as possible.

In the meantime, we invite you to join KBIA as a member, or renew your membership. Our 2019 membership form can be found on our website hereMembership fees support KBIA in the year they are given and remain crucial to the financial health and stability of our nonprofit organization while still giving scholarships.

Your generosity, in any amount, helps us make a difference both in this community and our children’s lives. In addition to our membership, please consider a donation to our scholarship fund, facilities fund, and/or our general fund. Visit the “How to Donate” section of our website to find out more about each fund. All donations help support our beloved KBIA, a place where children explore the vast and rugged beauty of the Maine coast in summer, while building knowledge, leadership, and respect for themselves, others and their world.

Sincerely,

Martin Lodish
Executive Director

2018 Happy Birthday KBIA

Happy Birthday KBIA!
Banner Image

Article Image

November 9, 1910 marks the day the Kennebunk Beach Improvement Association was founded. KBIA has had 108 amazing years of educating young explorers, mentoring leaders, providing a place to grow friendships, and advocating the preservation of the Kennebunk Beach area. There are so many things that make KBIA the wonderful place it is, but mostly it is YOU…our dedicated members, volunteers, donors, staff…and it’s all for the kids.  We will be thinking of all of you on our birthday today, and we hope you will think of us too!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY KBIA!

#GivingTuesdayKBIA

Know what is better than birthday presents? Birthday donations!  On November 27th, we are all given the opportunity to give towards causes, charities, and organizations that mean something to us.

What better gift to give, than the experience of KBIA? No donation is too small, and all contributions go towards your choice of scholarships, facilities, and/or the general fund.

Let’s take a closer look:
  • Scholarships: For children who otherwise would not be able to learn to sail, make crafts, go island exploring, play tennis, learn to swim…among the many amazing summer activities at KBIA.  And not only do they have access to classes, but they are forming friendships and making memories to last a lifetime.  Each year we have traditionally offered 20 to 25 children the opportunity to experience a KBIA summer — free of charge and discreetly issued.  Donating to our scholarship fund is donating an invaluable experience to a child who will forever cherish their time spent at KBIA.

  • Facilities: Our unique facility is located at the base of a small peninsula known as Lord’s Point between Mother’s Beach and a sheltered cove. Keeping up with building and property repairs, updates, and improvements is a constant project aiming to make the campus safe, convenient, and enable our classes to be the most they can be.

  • General:  Let us decide! This donation fund can be accessed for a multitude of projects for the benefit of KBIA summer enrichment activities.

Please consider a year-end donation so that KBIA can continue to provide “summers of experience” here at the beach!

The season for giving and gratitude is upon us! A time of year when we are asked to look outward, to our community, and give what we can. Here at KBIA, we are in a constant state of gratefulness to our donors, members, volunteers, and staff who keep summers alive for the kids of KBIA.

On this day – November 27th – we have been called to action…#GivingTuesday is a day we are asked to give in whatever capacity we are able, to a cause, an organization, to a greater good.  We hope you consider KBIA on this day.

GIVING TUESDAY

SCHOLARSHIP FUND

Article Image

Every child deserves a summer full of learning, mentors, and friends.  But not every child has the means.  Each year we have traditionally offered 20 to 25 children the opportunity to experience a KBIA summer — free of charge and discreetly issued. We are able to set the number of scholarships based directly on the amount of money donated specifically to scholarships. Donating to our scholarship fund is donating an invaluable experience to a child who will forever cherish their time spent at KBIA.

FACILITIES FUND

Article Image

Updating and maintaining KBIA facilities is necessary to keep our campus and programs running smoothly.  Your donation to the facilities fund will support some upcoming off-season projects — last year we updated new siding and trim to the Smith House and repaired the sea wall along the cove.

GENERAL FUND

Let us decide! This donation fund can be accessed for a multitude of projects for the benefit of KBIA summer enrichment activities.

All donations help support a place that lets children be children and lets them explore the vast and rugged beauty of the Coast of Maine in summer, while building knowledge, leadership, and respect for themselves, others and their world.

2018 Letter from the KBIA President

News from the Beach
August 23, 2018
A Letter from the KBIA President

First of all, I want to thank David Sweetser for all the time and effort he has put into KBIA for the last 15 years, including two stints on the Board of Directors, which included being President the past two years. Without his leadership, KBIA would not be in such a great position today!

I would also like to recognize all the hard work and dedication of our Executive Director, Martin Lodish. For the last nine and a half years he has put his heart and soul into his job at KBIA, and has been instrumental to the tremendous success and growth of our wonderful institution.

On that note, I wanted to share with you that after much thought, Martin has decided that next season, the summer of 2019, will be his last at KBIA. He plans on pursuing new adventures and actually being able to take summer vacations with his family!

While everyone may be saddened by the news, we are very fortunate that Martin has given us a year plus notice. This will allow our new board ample time to search for, hire, and properly groom the best candidate to fill the Executive Director position. Please be assured that we will conduct a thorough and professional search beginning this fall and will update you throughout the process.

I would like to welcome new board members, Lisa Luken, Andrew Scipio del Campo, Tina Souza, and Isabelle Vaillancourt and thank them in advance of their willingness to serve.

Also, thanks to our new officers, Vice Presidents Donna Smythe-Wilson and Nina Chagnon, Treasurer John Wiseman, and Secretary Leigh Griswold Boudreau.

On behalf of the new Board of Directors and Officers of KBIA, we are looking forward to working with our tremendous KBIA staff and wonderful membership to ensure that KBIA continues to grow and thrive in the future!

Warm Regards,

JB

What a summer! Our 108th season at KBIA was one of the best yet and we want to thank all 657 participants who were here with us throughout the summer for all the fun.

Weekly we offered more than 55 various programs, sold-out movie nights, bonfires on the beach, teen and tween nights, and open sail/kayak weekends.  We also hosted our 27th annual 5K/1K road race and the ninth annual Reid Sacco Family Regatta, family cove walks, a swim meet, a family pool day, and two celebratory awards/barbecues.  We are so fortunate to call KBIA home for the summer and we hope you do too.

Thank you for the memories!

Extend the gift of “summer”

Please help us keep the spirit of summer alive for children who are unable to attend KBIA without assistance. For every $25 donated to the KBIA scholarship fund, we are able to invite a child to attend KBIA for one day, for every $125 donated a child can attend for a week, and for every $500 donated a child can attend for four weeks!  The impact of a summer spent swimming, sailing, and just “being a kid” has a lasting impression. All donations — large, small and/or online are greatly appreciated.

Congratulations to our August award-winners

We concluded our 2018 season with a great turnout to KBIA’s biannual BBQ & Awards ceremony on August 18. Coming soon to KBIA members!

“Make new friends but keep the old, one is silver and the other gold”

When thinking of KBIA, these song lyrics ring true in all our hearts…it is a special community where you make new friends each year, while reuniting with friends made in summers past.  We come from all over the country, all over the world and join together during summers at KBIA.  To help us keep in touch year-round, we publish a Membership Directory every fall with families’ names, addresses, phone numbers and e-mails. Following tradition, it also includes a listing of our “silver” award winner names from our July and August awards ceremonies.  Members will receive the booklet in the mail as soon as it is available.

Thoughts? Comments? Questions?
We want to hear from you!

As we often do, at the end of every spectacular season at KBIA – each one seemingly better than the last – we like to reflect on our time down at the beach.  And we want to hear about your reflections as well! What did you and your family like most at KBIA? What can we improve on next year? In the spirit of open dialogue, we want to know how we may serve our members even better in the future. We invite you to gather your thoughts and send them to Executive Director Martin Lodish.
