KBIA Summer traditions

Kicking off the second half of summer with a weekend full of festivites is just how we roll at KBIA.  On Saturday, we started off the day with our July Watersports, Awards & BBQ.  Our most important and meaningful tradition is giving out ribbons and wedges to many smiling and encouraged children.  Wrapping up a fun-filled day, the adults of KBIA gathered on the cove for our tenth annual Seaside Celebration.  Moving into the second half of the summer season, we are looking forward to some newly added family social events, the Reid Sacco Family Regatta, Cove Walks, weekend sailing & kayaking, movie nights, and so much more!

Family Fun Events – NEW!

Just in case you weren’t having enough fun this summer, we have been working to create more opportunities for family and community gatherings at KBIA.  We are excited to announce three new events to add to your social calendar this week!

Extended Family Bonfire
Wednesday, July 26

Our Wednesday family bonfire and barbecue on the beach will stay open for an adult/family gathering until the movie night is about to close (we will close it down just before 9PM).  Bring an appetizer or something to share, any beach game (bocce, horseshoes, etc.), and meet us at Mother’s Beach from 6 to 9 PM.  This is a great opportunity to meet other members and experience a fun evening on the beach. If you partake in adult beverages, please keep them in covered containers. Please remember to bring your own plates, cups, cutlery.  No registration required.

Swim Meet
Friday, July 28

Hosted at the KBIA pool, join us for a swim meet against participants from the Portland Polar Bears Swim Team.  Warm ups at 5 PM, event start at 5:30 PM.  Any child aged 7 and up that is enrolled at any point in the summer on Swim team (diving included!) is encouraged to attend. Sign up at KBIA with Anu at the pool or Sue Donaher ([email protected]).  Spectators welcome to cheer on all participants!

Family Pool Day
Sunday, July 30

Join us on Sunday between 1 and 3 PM for open swim for the whole family! That’s right – pretty much for the first time ever, we are inviting families (adults too!!) for a splashing good time in the KBIA pool.  For an added treat, we will also have ice cream available.  Suggested donations of $5 per person, this event is open to all members, no registration required.  If more than 50 swimmers want to swim at any one time, we will rotate people in.

Honoring our children
July award-winners named

We have many children here who excel in their areas of special interest, and we honored them at Saturday’s awards ceremony with KBIA “wedges.”  For children we saw go “above and beyond,” we awarded the traditional silver-ware that has a permanent home in our office.  Their names will be engraved, forever a part of our KBIA history.  This year’s July award-winners include:
  • Kate Scipio del Campo for the Feldman Art Award
  • Sophia Duncan for the Sisters Gerald & Vincent Art Award
  • Tru Jarvis for the Keeper of the Cove Award
  • Braden Luken for the Eagle Rock Yacht Club Friendship Cup
  • Rosemary Campanella for the Griswald Cup Award for tennis staff
  • Gracyn Strachan for the Cornelia C. Smith Swimming Award for staff

*All KBIA children receive participant ribbons.  If you did not pick them up after the awards, and would like to do so, please check the office.  We also have a number of “wedges,” or plaques for our award-winners not present on Saturday!

Seaside Celebration
Great friends, spectacular night

A spectacular crowd attended our tenth annual Seaside Celebration.  A night full of friends, libations, and delicous food, made for a fantastic way to celebrate the special community that we are so fortunate to be a part of. And who are we kidding – nothing beats the view over the cove – rain or shine, the beautiful view makes any night special.  Thank you to all participants of the silent auction – winners of the pool party, bonfire BBQ, and parking spot will be contacted by office staff.  Donations to the KBIA scholarship fund are gratefully accepted and appreciated.

Sailing for a great cause
Eighth Annual Reid Sacco Family Regatta

Honoring a longtime KBIA student and instructor who lost his battle with sarcoma at the young age of 20 in 2005, the Reid Sacco Family Regatta holds a special place in our hearts.  Sailors and spectators alike are invited to the eighth annual Reid Sacco Family Regatta hosted by KBIA on Saturday, August 12th.  The day starts at 12:30 PM with a skipper meeting, followed by sailing at 1 PM.  Interested participants should register in the office to reserve a KBIA boat or bring their own boat to launch between 285 and 292 Beach Avenue.  Due to the shallow nature of the cove, even at high tide, sailors should use an Opti, Laser, or Chickadee watercraft.

A $10 suggested donation per sailor will benefit the Reid Sacco Foundation.  For information on the Reid Sacco Foundation, visit www.cancerinyoungadults.org/about-the-alliance/.

Volunteer Board
Get involved!

The KBIA Board of Directors is a purely volunteer run organization.  The Board is always looking for people who are interested in becoming more involved, whether by working on a committee or by sitting on the Board itself.  Please contact the office (who will forward your interest along to the appropriate committee of the Board), if you would like to nominate yourself or someone else, join a committee, or simply want to learn more about the different opportunities available.

Flying the Grand Ol’ Flag
Article Image

KBIA’s yacht club flagpole

With pride, we fly our colors everyday:  the American flag, the Canadian Flag for our visiting friends, the State of Maine flag, and the KBIA burgee.

Did You Know?
KBIA has a “yacht club flagpole,” different from a traditional flagpole, so that means the American flag flies as it would on a ship.  Consistent with U.S. flag etiquette, the national ensign flies on the gaff, which represents the stern of a boat and the position of command and honor.

All are welcome to join!  It is the continuous generosity of KBIA members and friends that enable us to provide children the same safe, fun, beautiful, and nurturing learning environment that has been provided to five generations of children, while allowing us the opportunity to grow and improve our programs.

Annual membership fees help support KBIA’s programs. We’re proud to be a place that lets children be children and lets them explore the vast and rugged beauty of the Coast of Maine in summer, while building knowledge, leadership, and respect for themselves, others and their world. We’re particularly proud of the scholarships we offer to children in the Kennebunk area who might otherwise not be able to take advantage of our KBIA enrichment programs, and of our many other community endeavors.

Membership fees remain a crucial element for us to achieve operational breakeven, to allow us to provide local scholarships, and to keep the cost of classes down.

All of us at KBIA thank you for your continued backing and generous contributions. We would not be able to provide exemplary programming and quality instruction without your generosity.

A Letter from Treasurer David Keating

A Letter from Treasurer David Keating

I am writing to you to give you a short summary of the KBIA finances for the year ending December 31, 2016. I am pleased to report that we have had another successful year at the KBIA whereby our finances continue to be on a solid footing as a result of the support from the KBIA community and our discipline of making the program self-sustainable on an operating basis.  Throughout the year we continued to maintain our recent practice of aggressive cost management and conservative forecasting. With another strong year of steady attendance in the program and the continuing support of the KBIA community, the KBIA remains financially stable and well positioned with carrying on the tradition of providing kids an exciting summer program.

Membership was slightly down from 2015, however, it is important to note that 2015 had the benefit of a 9 week program instead of the normal 8 weeks. With that said, if you normalize 2015 for 8 weeks, then our program revenue was up by $5,000 – but we work in the realm of actual numbers so we did see a ‘downturn’ in total revenue of $47,000 from last year.

On the direct program expense side, expenses were down commensurate with the reduction in wages attributed to having slightly fewer staff hours booked and our philosophy of ensuring that the programs are run profitably while keeping our sight on the total operating line to ensure that we are cash positive.

In 2016 the support from the KBIA community enabled us to transfer a large portion of donated funds to the Facilities Fund to ensure the continued upkeep and improvement of the KBIA infrastructure and cover a shortfall in revenue. The Facilities Fund will also allow us to tackle some necessary upgrades in the coming year and include a new floor for our tent, a motor for one of our boats, as well as a few other smaller projects.

As we look to 2017, the KBIA is financially in a strong position, however, the impact of the minimum wage increase in Maine from $7.50 to $9.00 presents a challenge to us given that we operate at a breakeven level for 2017. Wages are our single largest expense item and in order to offset the inevitable rise, the board has decided to increase program fees by 5% ensuring that we do not run a deficit.

Highlights from 2016 include:
  • Total Revenue was down 7.5% year over year, expenses were down 4%;
  • 27 children attended KBIA on scholarship;
  • Average program revenue per member up 4.9% year over year;
  • Members stood at 320 down from 356 in 2015; and
  • 680 people took classes at the KBIA.
As a result, we had $588,000 of total revenue representing a year over year decline in revenue of 7.5%. While program expenses were down approximately $40,500 or 12%, total expenses of $598,000 were down 4% resulting in an operating loss of $10,000.  We did manage to contain our non-program expenses by keeping the administration costs virtually flat, reducing the marketing and communication expenses slightly, but the facilities and maintenance expenses did see an increase this.

In summary, declining top line revenue resulted in a shortfall, hence we incurred an operating loss of $10,000 in 2016. However, through the generous donations of the KBIA community, the KBIA ended the year in the black and funds were transferred to the Facilities Fund to improve and enhance the infrastructure in the near term.

Our objective of making the program self-sustainable on an operating basis is our goal and with the minimum wage about to increase in Maine, we will implement a 5% increase in program fees in 2017.  These results for 2016 are a reminder that as we continue to expand our programs and deliver exciting programs to the kids, we need to ensure that our revenue and cost structures are aligned for continuing financial stability of the KBIA going forward.

In 2014 we appointed an Investment Manager for the endowment with the objective of preserving and growing the endowment fund for future facility upgrades and sustaining the scholarship fund.  The fund has been preserving its value, but in a low interest rate environment along with a conservative mandate, the growth has been moderate.

We continue to be conservative in our planning and target operational break-even for the programs.   And as we approach the summer, the Board will evaluate each program within KBIA and make any adjustments that may be necessary to ensure that the kids have a safe and exciting summer of discovery, where they can build new friendships and make memories in the beautiful surroundings of Kennebunk Beach.

If you have any comments or suggestions, please feel free to contact me.

Best regards,
David Keating
Treasurer, KBIA Board of Directors

A Letter from President David Sweetser

A Letter from President David Sweetser

Hello from Wellesley, MA!!  I am looking out the window organizing my thoughts for this letter, in particular, and for KBIA, in general.  The snow has been light and the mercury is screaming 21 degrees.  But, my thoughts are of warm summer days.  The breeze is gentle and the sunshine is bright, and my mind is lingering on memories of my time at KBIA when my daughters attended classes, and now my granddaughter.  I have been fortunate to have spent over 13 years being associated with the Board of Directors of KBIA.  And even with that extensive time with KBIA, I have realized that I have only just begun to understand the KBIA legacy and its significant impact upon the summer lives of so many people.  The intricate bond that exists between the previous generations of parents, campers and friends of KBIA and the organization is incredible and far exceeds my original understanding.  I extend a heartfelt and sincere ‘thank you’ to all the past Board Members and employees of KBIA who have worked to cultivate this bond.

This organization has weathered the test of time and will proudly be entering our 107th season this year.   I have been most impressed with the support of past Board Officers as they offer me their assistance and knowledge.  But, to fulfill our potential, KBIA would greatly benefit from the help and support from all previous generations.  The current Board welcomes your guidance and experience.  I ask you to reach out and engage us and we will attempt to do the same.  Many of you have participated in focus group discussions, stakeholder meetings and other recent outreach efforts by the Board.  We will continue such efforts in the form of additional social activities to encourage your participation in the KBIA community – similar in mission to the Seaside Celebration.

The future of KBIA is determined by the actions of today.  The past several years have witnessed the significant upgrade of the physical facilities of KBIA.  Certainly the pool, the playground and the renovations to both Smith and Strong Cottages have restored KBIA’s physical presence.  The tireless efforts of many of you over the last few years have stabilized the facilities at KBIA.  Our maintenance and repair protocol have positioned them well for the future.  Thank you to all who contributed in many ways to these accomplishments.

I would like to see KBIA take a reasoned and measured perspective as to how we will evolve in the short and longer terms.  Our view forward is not limited by the previous years’ demands which required immediate attention.  Our long range planning committee will be afforded the time and support to develop coordinated plans.  One example of this longer term vision is that we will be addressing the opportunities that Smith Cottage offers to KBIA.  Should we raze the cottage and replace it with a more efficient building?  Should we repair the existing structure and conserve our capital?  Required environmental and permit approvals place severe limitations on the expansion of the cottage.

One very special development that KBIA has experienced in the last several years is the growth of the scholarship program.  Many of you voice your support for this initiative by the donations that you send to us.  Martin Lodish, Executive Director, has developed networks with school administrators and the community at large to invite kids the experience of summers at KBIA who otherwise would not be able to attend.  We are able to identify and provide participation in a discreet and effective manner.  This effort is an integral part of our Mission Statement and the Board takes pride in this accomplishment.  I intend to continue robust support of this program.

The underlying strength of our KBIA community is built on two foundations:  the generous time, effort, and money of KBIA supporters; and the dedication and passion of our faculty and staff.  I think you will agree that KBIA has the most able and compassionate faculty and staff of any known summer program.  Without these two vital groups of people, KBIA would not be where it is today and our future would be less bright.  I think all of us know that we are part of something very special.  I know you share my enthusiasm.

As wonderful as our past has been, I am even more optimistic about our future.  A future of accomplishment and success because of you and your support, today.  We invite you to join KBIA as a member.  Our 2017 membership form can be found on our website hereMembership fees support KBIA in the year they are given and remain crucial to the financial health and stability of our nonprofit organization. Please also consider a donation to your choice of our scholarship fund, facilities fund, and/or our general fund in addition to your membership. Please visit the “How to Donate” section of our website for more details on each fund. Thank you.

Respectfully,
David Sweetser
President of the KBIA Board of Directors
