Week 6: Dive into the fun!

Article Image

The best part of our KBIA summer is hearing the laughter of children, seeing their inquisitive faces soaking in the new skills being taught, and watching lifelong friendships being made.  August is here, and we welcome in these last weeks of summer with open arms and hearts. Coming up this month we have our last Cove Walk, KBIA Olympic trials, the Reid Sacco Family Regatta, movie nights, beach bonfires, free swim, and so much more.  With so much going on we hope you’ll join us in making the most of the rest of this summer.

Set sail with us for a great cause!

Sailors and spectators alike are invited to KBIA’s seventh annual Reid Sacco Family Regatta on Saturday, August 6th. The day starts with a skipper meeting at 11 AM, followed by sailing at 11:30 AM. Interested participants should register in the office to reserve a KBIA boat or bring their own boat to launch between 285 and 292 Beach Avenue. Due to the shallow nature of the cove, even at high tide, sailors should use an Opti, Laser, Taz or Chickadee watercraft.

A $10 suggested donation per sailor will benefit the Reid Sacco Foundation. The regatta honors a longtime KBIA student and instructor who died of sarcoma at age 20 in 2005. For information on the Reid Sacco Foundation, visit www.cancerinyoungadults.org/about-the-alliance/.

A Piece of KBIA History
It all started with a postcard

Article Image

A postcard with the picture of Strong Cottage and the words “The Lights Live Here…” was recently uncovered by Kelly [Gruenwald] Childers and Kim Gruenwald, daughters of Starr Light Gruenwald. Starr, her parents, and sister “Dee” summered in Kennebunk Maine in the late 1940s to early 1950s. While most stories of summers spent there were recalled by their mother as staying at a “cottage” along the coast, Kelly and Kim were more than surprised to see the “cottage” as a very large estate right on the cove opposite Mother’s beach.

Travelling from Terre Haute, Indiana, Starr and her family would stay the summer at our very own Strong Cottage, before the Strong Family took over ownership. While Starr’s sister Dee spent most of the summer inside the cottage reading books, Starr remembers many outdoor adventures including swim lessons in the Cove, 20 cent ice cream scoops at the Dipsy Baths every night, and movies at a theater in Kennebunkport where they served fried clams instead of your typical popcorn snack.

Starr, along with her two daughters and her sister-in-law Lillian, made a special trip up to Maine this summer to visit Strong Cottage – Starr’s first visit back in over 60 years. Now 79, a retired preschool teacher, she was thrilled to see that the cottage where her family made many fond memories was now home to a thriving summer enrichment program for young children. After touring her old summer home, Starr revealed that she was off to search for some good fried clams…and we are pretty sure she found what she was looking for. We wish the family well and hope they will visit us at KBIA again soon.

KBIA Olympic trials
Friday, August 5

This Friday, August 5th, we will be hosting a theme night at the pool: KBIA Olympic trials!  Open to anyone that has signed up and participated in Swim Team at any point this summer, kids will be broken into teams and will have a KBIA Team Leader to support them through their journey.  Participants will compete in swim events based on their level of swim ability and age.   We are also including diving in the olympic trials so anyone interested in competing their dives must sign up with Lauren and Victoria.  We are so excited for this special event and hope to see you there!

Getting in and out safely at KBIA

Please help us keep KBIA safe for everyone! Our pick-up/drop-off zone is designed for a quick in-and-out, and it is imperative that drivers stay with their vehicles at all times. In case of emergency, this is the only way in for response vehicles. Kennebunk police have and will continue to ticket. We appreciate your cooperation in helping us move traffic along in that busy section!

KBIA Summer traditions

This past Saturday, we had a wonderfully full weekend of KBIA festivities, including the July Watersports, Awards & BBQ, and the Seaside Celebration.  Our most important and meaningful tradition is to give out ribbons and wedges to many smiling and encouraged children. The Seaside Celebration crowd was treated to a spectacular show over the cove as thunderstorms paraded through ending with a gorgeous sunset.  Moving into the second half of the summer season, we are looking forward to the Reid Sacco Family Regatta, one last Cove Walk, weekend sailing & kayaking, movie nights, and so much more!

Honoring our children
July award-winners named

We have many children here who excel in their areas of special interest, and we honored them at Saturday’s awards ceremony with KBIA “wedges.”  For children we saw go “above and beyond,” we awarded the traditional silver-ware that has a permanent home in our office.  Their names will be engraved, forever a part of our KBIA history.  This year’s July award-winners include:

  • Alex Sullivan and Will Morris for the Comelia C. Smith Award for staff
  • Sophia Duncan for the Feldman Award for the arts
  • Ainsley Burr for the Sisters Gerald & Vincent Art Award for the arts
  • Griffin Lament for the Keeper of the Cove Award
  • Griffin Lament for the Friendship Cup
  • Virginia Kozikowski for the Griswald Cup for tennis teaching

*All KBIA children receive participant ribbons.  If you did not pick them up after the awards, and would like to do so, please check the office.  We also have a number of “wedges,” or plaques for our award-winners not present on Saturday!

Seaside Celebration
Friends, artwork, and a whole lotta fun

A few thunderstorms rolling through didn’t keep members and friends from gathering for Saturday’s ninth annual Seaside Celebration.  Weathering the storms inside the ‘Adventures Tent’ with cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, and a silent auction, gave way to breathtaking views over the cove and even a rainbow.  Beautiful artwork was put on display by the Heartwood College of Art to be purchased by some very lucky patrons.  It was a grand time to catch up with old friends, meet new friends, and enjoy the evening, all by a spectacular setting by the sea!

Seaside Celebration
Saturday, July 23

Join us this Saturday, from 6 to 8 PM, on the KBIA lawn for our ninth annual Seaside Celebration.  From cocktails and hors d’oeuvres, to auction items and an art sale, we will be having more fun than we will know what to do with! This night unites the “older” members of this KBIA community (21 and older, please), inviting friends a chance to catch up and enjoy the beautiful setting by the cove.

Auction items available to bid on at the Seaside include:
1) One parking space for the 2017 season — convenient to your favorite summer enrichment program and one of the best beaches around!

2) Pool party at the KBIA pool for up to 20 swimmers for before the end of the 2017 season.

3) A private hot dog roast and s’mores on the beach for up to 10 — sit back and enjoy as KBIA staff provides the food and fun!

If you would like to bid on any auction item but cannot attend the Seaside, please contact Martin Lodish.

The highlight of the evening will be to not only enjoy good company by the cove, but to also have the opportunity to take a piece of the beach home with you.  Heartwood College of Art and KBIA have collaborated for a third time to showcase paintings of respected regional artists whose work were inspired by Kennebunk beach.  Paintings are for sale for $400 each and pieces measure 12″ x 16″ or 14″ x 14″.

It’s not too late to RSVP to events@kbia.net or call 967-2180, please come celebrate summer with us!

Celebration of Life for Maureen

From the Beach
July 10, 2016
Celebration of Life for Maureen

In remembrance of Maureen, a dear friend who lived her life with joy and passion, we are honored to hold her Celebration of Life at KBIA, a place she so loved. Friends and family are invited to gather between 4 and 7 PM on Saturday, July 16. All who loved Maureen are welcome.

Bring your favorite story of Maureen, and, if you wish, please bring your favorite picnic dish to share…Maureen always loved the spirit of a great potluck dinner! A Sign Up Genius webpage has been set up to organize what people can bring such as a snack, appetizer, main dish, or dessert – you can visit the webpage here and sign up for what you would like to contribute. Maureen also loved wildflowers, so please let us know if you have any to share at the celebration; these will be collected on July 16 to decorate the tables. Parking is limited, so we encourage carpooling with a friend. The Shoreline Explorer also runs hourly shuttles to and from downtown Kennebunk and Mother’s Beach.

In lieu of flowers, the McEnaney family requests that donations be made to the KBIA scholarship fund in Maureen’s name. Friends of the McEnaney family have set up a GoFund Campaign in honor of Maureen’s passion for education, especially that of her children. This account is intended to provide assistance to Mike and Maureen’s children in their future educational goals. Please visit the GoFundMe page here.

We hope you are able to join us on Saturday,

Martin Lodish and the KBIA family

Celebrate the USA at KBIA

We had a great opening week at KBIA and will be starting our second week off with a bang, holding classes as usual on Monday and celebrating the 4th of July with lots of American pride – remember to wear some red, white, and blue!  Also this week we will be hosting the MIRC sailing race, campfire & beach BBQ night, open sail & kayak, and much more.

Our Monday Night Movie time has been moved to 6-8 PM, so that everyone can partake in some spectacular beach fireworks at dusk, roughly 9:15 PMThe fireworks are set off between Gooch’s and Middle beaches, and they look great from Mother’s Beach and the KBIA area as well! Happy Independence Day from all of us at KBIA.

Flying the Grand Ol’ Flag

KBIA’s yacht club flagpole

With pride, we fly our colors everyday:  the American flag, the Canadian Flag for our visiting friends, the State of Maine flag, and the KBIA burgee.

KBIA has a “yacht club flagpole,” different from a traditional flagpole, so that means the American flag flies as it would on a ship.  Consistent with U.S. flag etiquette, the national ensign flies on the gaff, which represents the stern of a boat and the position of command and honor.

We Remember Maureen McEnaney

From the Beach
July 3, 2016
We remember

It is with a heavy heart that I write to inform you that KBIA’s beloved and longtime CIT Coordinator Maureen McEnaney passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 2nd, after battling with cancer for more than two years.

Maureen joined the KBIA staff in 2011, transforming the CIT program, and hosting many fun Tween Nights. With her four children also attending KBIA for several summers, KBIA was – and is – a place of family, friendship, and fun-filled days for their entire family. Her fun loving and good natured presence will be greatly missed at KBIA and in the Kennebunk communities.

As this news will affect each individual differently, especially children, it is important to support one another through the grieving process and know that resources are available. The Center for Grieving Children (CGC), a Maine based non-profit supporting families, schools, and other organizations dealing with death and grief, has been an ongoing support to the KBIA community this summer as we have navigated the loss of Maureen.  The CGC will continue to be available to individuals as needed during this difficult time, so please let us know if you or your child could benefit from this service.

Details on a celebration of Maureen’s life will be forthcoming. In lieu of flowers, the McEnaney family requests that donations be made to the KBIA scholarship fund under Maureen’s name.

The KBIA family offers our love, support, and deepest sympathies to the McEnaney family.

Parking, Pick-ups, and Drop-offs

Please help us keep KBIA safe for everyone and stay with your vehicles in the designated pick-up and drop-off zone in front of the pool.  It is crucial to stay within the white paint — there is no spot before and after the crosswalk to the playground to enhance visibility of kids crossing the street.

The drop-off/pick-up zone is also for emergency vehicles, so drivers must remain with their cars at all times.  Kennebunk police have and will continue to ticket both areas.  We appreciate your cooperation in helping us stay safe, and move traffic along in that busy section!

Daily Open Swim

Can’t get enough of the water now that it’s finally summer?  Us either! KBIA offers a supervised free swim session on a daily basis, Monday through Friday, June 27 to August 19.  Half-hour free-swim sessions are available for all children ages 4 and older, enrolled in other KBIA classes that week.  Join us for a splashing good time between 12 and 12:30 PM and then again between 3:30 and 4 PM

Bathrooms & Changing Rooms

When nature calls…we have bathrooms!  Two public restrooms are located behind Smith House.  If all you need is a place to change into your bathing suit, please use one of the four family-sized changing rooms located in the back of the white Adventures Tent.

Cook Out at the Webhannet

Webhannet Golf Club is inviting all KBIA members to join them for a cookout, Saturday, July 9th at 5 PM.  Enjoy cocktails, BBQ Chicken, Burgers, Hot Dogs and all the fixins’ by Ned’s Bakes. There will be music and games for the kids.

Hello Summer!

HELLO SUMMER!

Monday, June 20th marks the first day of summer and also marks the day we officially open the KBIA office.  KBIA classes commence on Season Opening Day, Monday, June 27th. Thanks to our hard-working faculty and staff, we are ready to welcome new faces and welcome back old friends. And if you want to bring a friend, please do!  This year during Week 1 no membership fee will be required to register for classes, so this is a great time to share the KBIA experience or even check us out for the first time. See you Opening Day!

Registration reminder

It’s been a busy spring for us in the office at KBIA, and we thank all of our preregistered families for helping us in advance. Just a reminder that registration is first come, first served, and classes are filling up!

We are open all this week in advance of Opening Day, so don’t hesitate to contact us! We can answer many questions by phone, however, class registrations must be requested in writing by fax, email or regular mail. All forms necessary are available on our website at www.kbia.net. Hard copies of the 2016 Registration Guide are available through the office.

Reminder that we are now at the two week out point for withdrawing from Week 1 classes with only a $10 administration fee per class.  See page 26 of the Registration Guide for details.

Please be advised, as of June 20 our office hours are:

Monday8 AM to 5 PM
TuesdayFriday: 9 AM to 12 PM | 1 to 4 PM

Bundle Up! and Look for your designated picnic table

Back by popular demand, we have bundled some of our most popular classes to give children a three-hour (or, with tennis, four-hour) period of KBIA programming with supervision included between classes. Check our website for details on the specific classes offered, schedules, and prices.

Look for the picnic table with the wheelbarrows – we have two, one green, one blue! Again this year, we will reserve one picnic table exclusively for those in the bundle program, and a Bundle Coordinator will oversee the children throughout the day. For those children who opt for the extended hour, we will have a reserved spot for their belongings while they are at their tennis lessons.

And as a reminder for the bundles, parents drop off their child at the first class and pick them up at their last class.

Movie Nights

Grab some popcorn, pull up a seat, and enjoy the show! Our favorite night is coming back…two nights per week.  We will offer movies on Mondays and Wednesdays, 7 to 9PM, $7 fee.

Monday nights         Rated PG   Ages 7-12
Wednesday nights   Rated G     Ages 4-10

Due to capacity limits, admission is granted in the order registrations are received and parents MUST REGISTER children on their Registration Form or at the office by 4PM the day of Movie Night. Walk-ins cannot be accepted.

A Day at the Beach Road Race
