“My summer friends were among my best friends and still are to this day. It’s no surprise that a lot of people my age who grew up spending summers at the beach are back with their families. We all know how beautiful and special this place is, and we want our kids to feel the same way we do.”

~ “Remembering 100 Years at the Beach”

KBIA by the numbers

Closing out our 106th season at KBIA has us reflecting on another banner year down at the beach.  With open arms we welcomed back many familiar faces and were graced with the fortune of welcoming many new friends this summer.  KBIA served 680 people this season, the previous high being 691 in 2014!

Weekly we offered more than 55 various programs, and we also hosted a MIRC sailing competition, our 25th annual 5K/1K road race, the seventh annual Reid Sacco Family Regatta, the New England Youth Laser championship, and a KBIA Olympic trials, plus weekly sold-out movie nights, bonfires on the beach, teen and tween nights, and two celebratory awards/barbecues.

Take the KBIA Survey

KBIA is always looking for ways to better serve our members, and the children who take classes with us.  If you had a child or grandchild in the program, we ask you to take about 5 minutes out of your day to take our brief survey – and provide us with valuable feedback on KBIA programming, staff, and communication.  Thank you for helping us to make KBIA the place you want to be!

Extend the gift of “summer”

Article Image

Please help us keep the spirit of summer alive for children who are unable to attend KBIA without assistance.  For every $500 donated to the KBIA scholarship fund, we are able to invite a child to attend KBIA for a four week scholarship!  The impact of a summer spent swimming, sailing, and just “being a kid” has a lasting impression. All donations — large, small and/or online are greatly appreciated.

Steering the ship
David Sweetser named President

At August’s meeting, our Board of Directors appointed a new president, David Sweetser, a longtime KBIA supporter and board member.  David replaces Shannon Beer Belanger, mother of two and herself once a KBIA kid and office employee.  We thank Shannon for an incredible two years under her leadership.

KBIA wouldn’t and couldn’t run without the year-round efforts of its volunteer Board of Directors. The board works diligently behind the scenes and meets quarterly as a group to help steer the organization. This month we bid a fond farewell to departing members Courtney Finnegan Sepic and Susan Rundquist Palmer. Thank you all!

Coming soon to KBIA members!

Can we be pen pals?!  It’s that time of year again…to help us keep in touch year-round, we publish a Membership Directory every fall with families’ names, addresses, phone numbers and e-mails. Following tradition, it also includes a listing of winners’ names from our July and August awards ceremonies. If you haven’t already, please send us your preference as to whether or not you would like to be included in the directory, and how you would like your information printed.  Members will receive the booklet in the mail as soon as it is available.

Week 6: Dive into the fun!

Article Image

The best part of our KBIA summer is hearing the laughter of children, seeing their inquisitive faces soaking in the new skills being taught, and watching lifelong friendships being made.  August is here, and we welcome in these last weeks of summer with open arms and hearts. Coming up this month we have our last Cove Walk, KBIA Olympic trials, the Reid Sacco Family Regatta, movie nights, beach bonfires, free swim, and so much more.  With so much going on we hope you’ll join us in making the most of the rest of this summer.

Set sail with us for a great cause!

Sailors and spectators alike are invited to KBIA’s seventh annual Reid Sacco Family Regatta on Saturday, August 6th. The day starts with a skipper meeting at 11 AM, followed by sailing at 11:30 AM. Interested participants should register in the office to reserve a KBIA boat or bring their own boat to launch between 285 and 292 Beach Avenue. Due to the shallow nature of the cove, even at high tide, sailors should use an Opti, Laser, Taz or Chickadee watercraft.

A $10 suggested donation per sailor will benefit the Reid Sacco Foundation. The regatta honors a longtime KBIA student and instructor who died of sarcoma at age 20 in 2005. For information on the Reid Sacco Foundation, visit www.cancerinyoungadults.org/about-the-alliance/.

A Piece of KBIA History
It all started with a postcard

Article Image

A postcard with the picture of Strong Cottage and the words “The Lights Live Here…” was recently uncovered by Kelly [Gruenwald] Childers and Kim Gruenwald, daughters of Starr Light Gruenwald. Starr, her parents, and sister “Dee” summered in Kennebunk Maine in the late 1940s to early 1950s. While most stories of summers spent there were recalled by their mother as staying at a “cottage” along the coast, Kelly and Kim were more than surprised to see the “cottage” as a very large estate right on the cove opposite Mother’s beach.

Travelling from Terre Haute, Indiana, Starr and her family would stay the summer at our very own Strong Cottage, before the Strong Family took over ownership. While Starr’s sister Dee spent most of the summer inside the cottage reading books, Starr remembers many outdoor adventures including swim lessons in the Cove, 20 cent ice cream scoops at the Dipsy Baths every night, and movies at a theater in Kennebunkport where they served fried clams instead of your typical popcorn snack.

Starr, along with her two daughters and her sister-in-law Lillian, made a special trip up to Maine this summer to visit Strong Cottage – Starr’s first visit back in over 60 years. Now 79, a retired preschool teacher, she was thrilled to see that the cottage where her family made many fond memories was now home to a thriving summer enrichment program for young children. After touring her old summer home, Starr revealed that she was off to search for some good fried clams…and we are pretty sure she found what she was looking for. We wish the family well and hope they will visit us at KBIA again soon.

KBIA Olympic trials
Friday, August 5

This Friday, August 5th, we will be hosting a theme night at the pool: KBIA Olympic trials!  Open to anyone that has signed up and participated in Swim Team at any point this summer, kids will be broken into teams and will have a KBIA Team Leader to support them through their journey.  Participants will compete in swim events based on their level of swim ability and age.   We are also including diving in the olympic trials so anyone interested in competing their dives must sign up with Lauren and Victoria.  We are so excited for this special event and hope to see you there!

Getting in and out safely at KBIA

Please help us keep KBIA safe for everyone! Our pick-up/drop-off zone is designed for a quick in-and-out, and it is imperative that drivers stay with their vehicles at all times. In case of emergency, this is the only way in for response vehicles. Kennebunk police have and will continue to ticket. We appreciate your cooperation in helping us move traffic along in that busy section!

KBIA Summer traditions

This past Saturday, we had a wonderfully full weekend of KBIA festivities, including the July Watersports, Awards & BBQ, and the Seaside Celebration.  Our most important and meaningful tradition is to give out ribbons and wedges to many smiling and encouraged children. The Seaside Celebration crowd was treated to a spectacular show over the cove as thunderstorms paraded through ending with a gorgeous sunset.  Moving into the second half of the summer season, we are looking forward to the Reid Sacco Family Regatta, one last Cove Walk, weekend sailing & kayaking, movie nights, and so much more!

Honoring our children
July award-winners named

We have many children here who excel in their areas of special interest, and we honored them at Saturday’s awards ceremony with KBIA “wedges.”  For children we saw go “above and beyond,” we awarded the traditional silver-ware that has a permanent home in our office.  Their names will be engraved, forever a part of our KBIA history.  This year’s July award-winners include:

  • Alex Sullivan and Will Morris for the Comelia C. Smith Award for staff
  • Sophia Duncan for the Feldman Award for the arts
  • Ainsley Burr for the Sisters Gerald & Vincent Art Award for the arts
  • Griffin Lament for the Keeper of the Cove Award
  • Griffin Lament for the Friendship Cup
  • Virginia Kozikowski for the Griswald Cup for tennis teaching

*All KBIA children receive participant ribbons.  If you did not pick them up after the awards, and would like to do so, please check the office.  We also have a number of “wedges,” or plaques for our award-winners not present on Saturday!

Seaside Celebration
Friends, artwork, and a whole lotta fun

A few thunderstorms rolling through didn’t keep members and friends from gathering for Saturday’s ninth annual Seaside Celebration.  Weathering the storms inside the ‘Adventures Tent’ with cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, and a silent auction, gave way to breathtaking views over the cove and even a rainbow.  Beautiful artwork was put on display by the Heartwood College of Art to be purchased by some very lucky patrons.  It was a grand time to catch up with old friends, meet new friends, and enjoy the evening, all by a spectacular setting by the sea!

Seaside Celebration
Saturday, July 23

Join us this Saturday, from 6 to 8 PM, on the KBIA lawn for our ninth annual Seaside Celebration.  From cocktails and hors d’oeuvres, to auction items and an art sale, we will be having more fun than we will know what to do with! This night unites the “older” members of this KBIA community (21 and older, please), inviting friends a chance to catch up and enjoy the beautiful setting by the cove.

Auction items available to bid on at the Seaside include:
1) One parking space for the 2017 season — convenient to your favorite summer enrichment program and one of the best beaches around!

2) Pool party at the KBIA pool for up to 20 swimmers for before the end of the 2017 season.

3) A private hot dog roast and s’mores on the beach for up to 10 — sit back and enjoy as KBIA staff provides the food and fun!

If you would like to bid on any auction item but cannot attend the Seaside, please contact Martin Lodish.

The highlight of the evening will be to not only enjoy good company by the cove, but to also have the opportunity to take a piece of the beach home with you.  Heartwood College of Art and KBIA have collaborated for a third time to showcase paintings of respected regional artists whose work were inspired by Kennebunk beach.  Paintings are for sale for $400 each and pieces measure 12″ x 16″ or 14″ x 14″.

It’s not too late to RSVP to [email protected] or call 967-2180, please come celebrate summer with us!

Celebration of Life for Maureen

From the Beach
July 10, 2016
Celebration of Life for Maureen

In remembrance of Maureen, a dear friend who lived her life with joy and passion, we are honored to hold her Celebration of Life at KBIA, a place she so loved. Friends and family are invited to gather between 4 and 7 PM on Saturday, July 16. All who loved Maureen are welcome.

Bring your favorite story of Maureen, and, if you wish, please bring your favorite picnic dish to share…Maureen always loved the spirit of a great potluck dinner! A Sign Up Genius webpage has been set up to organize what people can bring such as a snack, appetizer, main dish, or dessert – you can visit the webpage here and sign up for what you would like to contribute. Maureen also loved wildflowers, so please let us know if you have any to share at the celebration; these will be collected on July 16 to decorate the tables. Parking is limited, so we encourage carpooling with a friend. The Shoreline Explorer also runs hourly shuttles to and from downtown Kennebunk and Mother’s Beach.

In lieu of flowers, the McEnaney family requests that donations be made to the KBIA scholarship fund in Maureen’s name. Friends of the McEnaney family have set up a GoFund Campaign in honor of Maureen’s passion for education, especially that of her children. This account is intended to provide assistance to Mike and Maureen’s children in their future educational goals. Please visit the GoFundMe page here.

We hope you are able to join us on Saturday,

Martin Lodish and the KBIA family
